San Remo, along with the French Riviera, had been the favorite refuge of Russian aristocracy fleeing the harsh winters of their homeland since the late 19th century. The Church of Christ the Savior, St. Catherine and St. Seraphim, more commonly known as the Russian Church, was built in 1913 to serve this community.
Inspired by traditional Russian Orthodox architecture, the church is a blend of the decorated “Novgorod” and “Moscow” styles, making it a unique masterpiece in the heart of the Ligurian Riviera.
Beyond religious practices, the Russian Church is a testament to the historical ties between Russia and Italy, particularly during the pre-revolutionary Russian era.
The Russian Church was built, in 1912, when the Russian community, vacationing in San Remo, reached a thousand people.
Today this work of art is one in the most famous symbols of San Remo.
This beautiful building stands at the beginning of the Empress’s Promenade, which was named after Tsarina Maria Alexandrovna.
The structure is characterized by the typical round domes of Russian architecture and inside the courtyard you can admire the busts of Vittorio Emanuele III and Elena of Montenegro.
