Welcome to Zuccarello

Zuccarello

Zuccarello is a fortified medieval village in the Val Neva, in the hinterland of Albenga, in the province of Savona. It lies on the valley floor at roughly 100–130 metres above sea level (sources differ on the exact figure) and has fewer than 300 inhabitants. It is essentially one thing, and an unmistakable one: a narrow street, via Armando Tornatore, lined with low arcades and closed at both ends by gates with towers, a medieval bridge over the Neva stream and the ruins of a castle on the hill above.

The village dates from the 13th century: a deed of 1248 ties it to the Marquises of Clavesana and the people of the valley, and from the 14th century it passed to the Del Carretto family. According to tradition, Ilaria Del Carretto was born here, the young woman immortalised in Jacopo della Quercia’s sarcophagus in Lucca Cathedral. Zuccarello belongs to the Borghi più belli d’Italia (Italy’s most beautiful villages), to the Comuni Fioriti and to the Perle della Liguria. It does not have the Orange Flag: that belongs to nearby Castelvecchio di Rocca Barbena.

Zuccarello works as a half-day or full-day trip, easy to combine with the sea at Albenga and Ceriale, about 12–13 km away. There are no beaches and no nightlife: you come to walk under the arcades, climb to the castle and, with an hour on the trail, reach Castelvecchio. Ilaria’s story is told in our feature Ilaria Del Carretto and Zuccarello.

What to see

What to see in Zuccarello

Zuccarello nel fondovalle della Val Neva

The village takes one to two hours, stops included. The centre is all on via Tornatore and the side lanes, which often climb and have steps: wear comfortable shoes. A sensible order is to arrive at the lower gate, cross the bridge, walk the street to the other gate, then climb to the castle if you have time.

La colonna della fustigazione a Zuccarello

Via Armando Tornatore and the arcades

This is the only main street of the village; there is no «via Roma», despite what some listings say. On both sides run low arcades with arches and pillars in a style halfway between Liguria and Piedmont, with some trompe l’oeil painting. Under the arcades were the workshops, and small windows served as shop displays. Walking it, you notice how intimate it feels, partly because traffic stays outside.

Look for the details in stone: sources also mention a slate column linked to the history of public floggings. It is something to find at your own pace, without expecting signs. Quiet prevails here: at midday the street can be almost empty.

Un carruggio coperto di Zuccarello

The two gates and the medieval bridge

The village is closed by two gates with towers: Porta Soprana, uphill, also called the Piedmont gate, and Porta Sottana, to the south. These are the only «towers» in Zuccarello; there is no freestanding tower. Just outside Porta Sottana is the humpback bridge over the Neva. It is often called a «Roman bridge», but it is medieval. It is the best spot to photograph the village, with water below and the bell tower behind.

Parts of the old walls survive too, and side lanes drop from the gates towards the stream. Enter by one gate and leave by the other, and you feel how the place was designed: a fortified trading post on a salt route that led towards the upper Tanaro valley and Piedmont.

Il borgo di Zuccarello con il campanile

The church of San Bartolomeo

The parish church is dedicated to St Bartholomew, patron of the village (feast on 24 August). It is a medieval church with a bell tower with mullioned windows in local stone. Inside is a canvas of the Madonna and Child with saints, attributed to Orazio De Ferrari, from the first half of the 17th century. Opening hours are not confirmed, so do not assume you can go in. The exterior and bell tower, however, dominate every view of the village.

Zuccarello vista dalla piazza dell'oratorio

Oratory of Santa Maria Nascente and the Quinzio Delfino Theatre

In the heart of the village stands the Oratory of Santa Maria Nascente (with San Carlo), a 17th–18th century building with a 15th-century wooden crucifix. The lower floor of a deconsecrated church has become the Teatro Quinzio Delfino, which hosts concerts and shows. The small square in front of the oratory gives a good view over the village.

Palazzo Marchionale and other chapels

On the street stands the Palazzo Marchionale of the Del Carretto family, with frescoes and a slate bas-relief mentioned in historical guides. Interior visits are not confirmed: enjoy it from outside. On the road from Albenga, before the village, is the chapel of Sant’Antonio Abate with late medieval frescoes; further off are the church of Nostra Signora della Neve (near the cemetery) and the ruins of San Giacomo. Opening times for these are not confirmed either.

La valle con i ruderi del castello sopra Zuccarello

The Del Carretto castle

Above the village are the ruins of the castle, first mentioned in 1233 and tied to the Del Carretto. It is not the «Clavesana Castle»: that stands in Castelvecchio di Rocca Barbena, is privately owned and open only during cultural events. In Zuccarello you climb on foot in about 20 minutes, on a cobbled path starting from via del Castello. There is no official information on access or hours: wear shoes with good soles and expect a viewpoint over the valley rather than a visitable building.

Il paese visto dal sentiero di Ilaria

The Sentiero di Ilaria to Castelvecchio

From the castle area starts the Sentiero di Ilaria (Ilaria’s Path), linking Zuccarello with Castelvecchio di Rocca Barbena. Guides give about 3 km and a little over an hour. Elevation gain and difficulty are not confirmed by official sources, so treat it as a hill walk with water and suitable shoes. It crosses holm oaks, downy oaks, chestnuts and olive trees, with wild thyme in spring. If you came by car, plan the return: the road between the two villages is about 6.6 km and 13 minutes. The full story is in the feature Ilaria Del Carretto and Zuccarello.

Where to stay

Where to stay in Zuccarello

There are few beds in the village itself, so book early. Staying here means silence, quiet evenings and no sea: fine if you want to walk and have a car. Countryside lodgings can also be found around the Val Neva, convenient by car. If you travel by train, the best choice is Albenga, with a station, restaurants and the sea. For the beach by day and the village in the evening, look at Ceriale, Loano or Laigueglia. We name no properties because the available information is not verified.

Getting there

How to get to Zuccarello

By car

Leave the A10 at Albenga and follow the Colle di San Bernardo road (SP 582) towards Garessio: about 13 km, 20 minutes from the toll gate. From central Albenga, about 12 km and 18 minutes. The old centre is narrow: leave the car outside.

By train

Zuccarello has no station. The nearest is Albenga, on the Genoa–Ventimiglia line. From there you need a bus or a private vehicle, about 20 minutes.

By bus

Services are few and no timetables are confirmed. Check TPL Linea (freephone 800 808 288). Without a car, plan your return very carefully.

By air

The most convenient airport is Genoa Cristoforo Colombo, about 89 km by road. Nice is about 129 km. In both cases you pass through Albenga.

Parking

There is no official information on car parks or fees. The advice is to leave the car on the outskirts, on the main road before the centre, and walk in. For the Valle Auzza loop, people park along the road to Garessio, near the Forestale.

The guide

Walks and hikes

Beyond the Sentiero di Ilaria, the area has tougher routes. The Valle Auzza loop with Poggio Grande (over 800 m) and Poggio Ceresa has about 750 m of ascent and is graded EE (expert hikers), with sparse waymarking: it starts at the Forestale house, on the road to Garessio. The 19th-century fort on the route is closed. Plan it carefully, preferably in winter or the shoulder seasons rather than summer. For easier paths carry a map: not all trails and markings are verified.

What to eat in Zuccarello

The food is that of the Ligurian hinterland. Torta pasqualina, with chard, ricotta and eggs, is eaten here as everywhere in Liguria. Among local products the Region mentions rocche, dry sweets based on hazelnuts, suitable for breakfast too. Where to buy them is not confirmed: ask in the village. In autumn pumpkin takes centre stage at the Festa della Zucca, held on Sunday 12 October in 2025, with dishes from the Pro Loco, porchetta and workshops. The 2026 date is not confirmed ⚠️.

There are few places to eat on via Tornatore. We list no names because hours and openings change: book at weekends and ask ahead, especially off-season.

Events in Zuccarello

The calendar has few fixed dates. In July there is usually a historical re-enactment linked to Ilaria, with a procession and traditional games: 2026 dates not confirmed ⚠️. On 24 August is the feast of St Bartholomew, with a procession and a band concert. In October there is the Festa della Zucca (see above). On 12 April 2026 the municipality marked the 700th anniversary of the wedding of Enrico Del Carretto and Caterina di Clavesana with a historical parade: a one-off event, already held. Always check dates on the municipality’s website.
