Where to stay in Vernazza

On the harbour, along Via Roma or up the hill? Areas, guesthouses and apartments, luggage and stairs, cars, when to book and recommended places.

Staying overnight in Vernazza means seeing the village once the day-trippers have gone: the harbour square in the evening, the floodlit bell tower, empty lanes at seven in the morning. In exchange you accept three things: the village is small and rooms are scarce, you cannot drive in, and almost every place to stay involves stairs. There are no large hotels: the choice is guesthouses, apartments and a few small hotels inside the old houses of the centre.

In short: come by train, pack light and book early. Choose the harbour for the view and village life, Via Roma if you take the train every day, the upper houses if you want quiet. Everything else about the village is in our guide to Vernazza.

How Vernazza is laid out

Vernazza, jewel of the Cinque Terre

Vernazza sits almost entirely in a narrow valley running down to the sea. The station is at the top end of the village; from there Via Roma, the only real street, runs down to the square on the little harbour. On either side, stairways and covered passages climb to the higher houses, on both flanks of the valley and below Doria Castle. From the station to the harbour is only a few minutes on foot: the distance is not the problem, the steps afterwards are.

Vernazza’s areas: where to stay

On the harbour and the square

Vernazza harbour with colourful houses

This is the Vernazza of the photographs: windows over the harbour, fishing boats pulled up on the slipway, the church of Santa Margherita a few metres away. Waking up here is the reason people stay in Vernazza. Albergo Barbara, for example, is right on the main square with a view of the harbour.

The downside: the square is the busiest spot during the day and stays lively until late in summer, with restaurant tables under the windows. Rooms with a view sell out first and cost the most. If you are a light sleeper, ask for a room at the back or on a higher floor.

Along Via Roma, towards the station

The most practical area: the train is minutes away and there are usually fewer steps to tackle with luggage. Ideal if you use Vernazza as a base for the other villages and take the train daily. It is also the street of shops and focaccia bakeries, so it is busy by day, and you usually will not have a sea view.

The upper houses

Vernazza amid the greenery seen from above

On both sides of the valley, among stairways and vegetable plots, there are rooms and apartments with more quiet and often a lovely view over the rooftops and the sea. The price is the climb: every return home is a staircase, sometimes a long one. The right choice for keen walkers staying several nights, less so for anyone with heavy bags or limited mobility.

Types of accommodation in Vernazza

Room at Albergo Barbara in Vernazza
  • Guesthouses (affittacamere): the most common option. Rooms inside the village’s old houses, often without a staffed reception or breakfast: the host arranges to meet you with the keys. Santa Marta Rooms, for example, has its rooms in Vernazza’s historic buildings.
  • Small hotels: few, with few rooms. They give you a point of contact and sometimes breakfast, but do not expect lifts or large lounges.
  • Apartments: handy for families and longer stays, with a kitchen. Vernazza Luxury Apartment, for example, is about 100 metres from the beach and has a fully equipped kitchen. Always check that the listing shows the CIN, the national ID code required in Italy since 2025.

Vernazza’s houses are often tall and narrow, with steep internal stairs: a truly step-free stay is rare. Before booking, ask which floor you are on, whether there are internal stairs and how many steps there are from the street.

Practical tips for staying in Vernazza

Narrow staircases in the historic centre of Vernazza

Arriving by train with luggage

The train is the easiest way in: the station is in the village and Monterosso or Corniglia are a few minutes away. From the station you walk down Via Roma: fine with a wheeled case, but stairs start as soon as you leave the main street. Do not count on a porter service: ask your host whether they can help, where they will meet you with the keys, and whether they can hold your bags before check-in and after check-out. A backpack or small case makes life much easier.

Car and parking

You cannot drive into the village: the centre is for residents only. Along the road down to Vernazza there are two private pay car parks, 1–1.5 km from the village, with a shuttle bus into town; spaces are limited and fill up in summer. After Soviore and San Bernardino the road is narrow and steep. If you can, leave the car in Levanto or La Spezia and continue by train. Full details in our guide on how to get to and park in Vernazza.

When to book

Vernazza has very few rooms for the demand. For June, July, August and September book months ahead, especially if you want a harbour view. April, May and October are the best months: more choice, lower prices, a calmer village. In winter several places close.

Taxes, trains and trails

Vernazza charges a tourist tax, paid on site; your accommodation will tell you the nightly amount. From 14 March to 1 November 2026 regional trains between Levanto and La Spezia use the Cinque Terre fare, which is cheaper after 7.30 pm. If you were planning to hike, note that since 10 September 2026 the Sentiero Verde Azzurro between Monterosso, Vernazza and Corniglia has been closed pending geological checks: check the National Park notices before you go.

If Vernazza is full, it is not a problem: the other villages are a few minutes away by train and you can come back for dinner on the harbour.

Frequently asked questions

Is it worth staying in Vernazza?

Yes, if you want the village in the evening and early morning, without the day visitors. But you have to accept small rooms, stairs, no car and high summer prices. If you need comfort and parking, Monterosso or Levanto are more practical.

Are there hotels in Vernazza?

A few small ones. Most of the choice is guesthouses and apartments in the old houses of the village, often without a staffed reception. Agree your arrival time and key collection in advance.

Can I drive to my accommodation in Vernazza?

No, the centre is for residents only. You can leave the car in one of the pay car parks along the road, 1–1.5 km from the village, and take the shuttle down, or arrive by train, which is the simplest option.

Is it better to stay on the harbour or near the station?

On the harbour for the view and atmosphere, accepting evening noise and higher prices. Near the station, along Via Roma, if you take the train every day and want fewer steps with your luggage.

Is there step-free accommodation in Vernazza?

It is rare: houses are tall and narrow, often with internal stairs. Always ask about the floor and the number of steps before booking. If stairs are a problem, consider Monterosso, which has a flat area near the station.

How far ahead should I book in Vernazza?

For summer and September, several months ahead: rooms are few, and those with a harbour view even fewer. In spring and October there is more choice, but weekends still fill up fast.

How do I visit the other villages from Vernazza?

By train: the station is in the village, Monterosso and Corniglia are a few minutes away, La Spezia less than twenty. From spring to autumn, when the sea is calm, there are also boats. The coastal path towards Monterosso and Corniglia has been closed since 10 September 2026.
