Corniglia is one of the quietest places to stay in the Cinque Terre. It sits high on a headland about a hundred metres above the sea, and it is the only one of the five villages that does not come down to the water. In the evening, once the day visitors have left, it is a small village with the sunset from the viewpoint. Rooms are few: almost all guesthouses, B&Bs and apartments in old houses, with a handful of other small places.
The key thing to understand before booking is how you will reach your room. The station is down at sea level: to get up to the village there is the Lardarina, a staircase of 377 steps, the paved road or the shuttle bus. If you travel with heavy luggage, choose a place near the shuttle stop or ask your host how to get there. Everything else about the village is in our guide to Corniglia.
How Corniglia is laid out

The village is gathered on top of the headland, among terraced vineyards. The main street, Via Fieschi, runs from the church of San Pietro to the Santa Maria viewpoint, which drops sheer to the sea. Halfway along is Largo Taragio, the square with the oratory of Santa Caterina; from here a stairway leads down to the Marina, the rocks where people swim. There is no beach in the village.
Below, at sea level, is the station, just over a kilometre by road from the centre. Every time you take the train you go down and come back up: that is the price of the quiet.
Corniglia’s areas: where to stay
In the village, along Via Fieschi

The choice for anyone who wants to live Corniglia: step outside and you are in the village, with the viewpoint a few steps away and dinner on the square without any transport. Arbasia de Ma, for example, is a guesthouse overlooking the sea, a few metres from the panoramic terrace. The downside is logistics: every train means going down and back up, and the lanes have steps even after the shuttle.
Near the station or along the road

More convenient if you take the train every day: no Lardarina every time you go out, and much simpler with luggage. They are more isolated, though: to have dinner in the village you have to go up, and the shuttle stops running early. Check the exact location on a map: “Corniglia” in a listing can mean the village, the road or the station area.
On the hillside, among the vineyards

Above and around the village there are houses and rooms among the vines, with sea views and total silence. They are the loveliest for a restful stay, but you almost always need a car or good legs: access is on foot along paths and stairways, or by car on narrow roads.
Types of accommodation in Corniglia

- Guesthouses (affittacamere): the most common option. Rooms in village houses, often without a reception or breakfast; Affittacamere Le Terrazze, for example, has sea-view terraces and a sun deck with hot tubs open in the warmer months.
- B&Bs: few, with few rooms and breakfast included. Carugiu is in the lanes of the centre.
- Apartments: the choice for families and longer stays, with a kitchen. Check that the listing shows the CIN, the national ID code required in Italy since 2025.
Almost every place is small and run by the owners themselves: agree your arrival time and ask where to collect the keys, especially if you are coming on an evening train.

From the station to the village with luggage
There are three ways up. The Lardarina, 377 steps in 33 flights: a real struggle with a heavy suitcase, best left to backpackers. The paved road, just over a kilometre uphill with no steps: longer but doable on wheels. The shuttle bus to the village, about five minutes: the best option with luggage, but the minibuses are small and with a big case you may have to wait for the next one. Buy your ticket beforehand, at the station or in village shops; the Cinque Terre Card covers it. Evening runs end early, so check the ATC timetable. Full details in our guide to the Lardarina and the climb from the station.
Car and parking
You can drive to Corniglia, but the last stretch of road is narrow and spaces are few: a handful of pay parking spots along the road, a few hundred metres from the village, and access to the village itself is for residents only. If you come by car, ask your accommodation where to leave it before booking. Otherwise park in Levanto or La Spezia and continue by train: Corniglia is about a quarter of an hour from La Spezia.
When to book
With so few rooms, book well ahead for June to September. In spring and October the village is at its best, with more choice and less heat for the climb. In winter several places close.
Taxes, trains and trails
Corniglia belongs to the municipality of Vernazza, which charges a tourist tax: you pay it on site and your accommodation will tell you the nightly amount. From 14 March to 1 November 2026 regional trains between Levanto and La Spezia use the Cinque Terre fare. There are no boats to Corniglia. Mind the trails: since 10 September 2026 the Corniglia–Vernazza–Monterosso section of the Sentiero Verde Azzurro has been closed, and the low path to Manarola is also closed in 2026. For Manarola, the high route via Volastra remains, about three hours through the vineyards.

Frequently asked questions
Is Corniglia a good place to stay?
Yes, if you want peace: it is the most secluded of the five villages and in the evening it belongs to those who sleep there. It is less convenient for trains, because the station is down below, and it has no beach. If you want the sea on your doorstep, choose Monterosso or Vernazza.
How do I get from the station to my accommodation with luggage?
By shuttle bus, which reaches the village in about five minutes: buy the ticket beforehand at the station or in the village, or use the Cinque Terre Card. Alternatively, take the paved road, just over a kilometre uphill. The Lardarina, with 377 steps, is not recommended with heavy bags.
Are there hotels in Corniglia?
Very few places call themselves hotels. Most of the choice is guesthouses, B&Bs and apartments, small and run by their owners. Always agree your arrival time.
Can I drive to Corniglia?
Yes, but parking is limited and paid, a few hundred metres from the village, and the village itself is for residents only. Ask your accommodation where to leave the car, or come by train.
How late does the Corniglia shuttle run?
Evening runs end early and the timetable changes with the season: check the current ATC timetable before you travel. If you arrive on a late train, ask your host how to get up or be ready to walk the road.
Can I walk from Corniglia to the other villages?
Only partly at the moment: since 10 September 2026 the path to Vernazza and Monterosso has been closed, and the low path to Manarola is closed in 2026. For Manarola you can climb to Volastra and descend through the vineyards, about three hours. Always check the Park notices.
How far ahead should I book in Corniglia?
For summer and September, well in advance: it is the village with the fewest rooms. In spring and October there is more choice, but weekends fill up fast.
