Arenzano

Arenzano is a cozy town located on the Ligurian Sea, nestled comfortably between the mountainous backdrop of the Apennines and the tranquil Ligurian Riviera.

Villa Negrotto Cambiaso, a 19th-century architectural jewel, embellishes the town of Arenzano with its historic elegance.

Adorned with the city’s most beautiful historic gardens, the villa directly overlooks the sea, allowing visitors to appreciate the grandeur of the Mediterranean while strolling through lush green paths.

The most striking element of the park, an Art Nouveau greenhouse built in 1931, still retains some of its original splendor. This unique 350-square-meter iron and glass structure is used for photo shoots, private events, exhibitions and markets.

Today Villa Negrotto Cambiaso is home to the Town Hall and is an integral part of Arenzano’s cultural heritage.

Arenzano’s Old Town, known as the ancient village of sailors, is a fascinating maze of pedestrian streets and squares. Built in typical Ligurian style, the streets wind from the waterfront to the Parish Church.

With pastel-colored facades, the “caruggi” or alleys teem with stores and restaurants, constituting Arenzano’s commercial and social lifeblood.

The most characteristic corners are Piazza Chiossone, known as “Nastré,” once an old laundry, and Piazza Colombo with its well.

Adjacent is Piazza XXIV Aprile, which houses the Palazzo Sant’Antonio, current home of the local Civic Library.

These historic buildings feature typical Ligurian architectural details, ancient sundials, terracotta masks, noble coats of arms, and shrines, all bearing witness to a picturesque and flourishing urban history.

The Shrine of the Infant Jesus of Prague in Arenzano is one of the most beautiful shrines in Liguria, a place of great artistic, spiritual and religious significance.

The shrine is accessed via a wide flight of steps, crowned by a column bearing a statue of the Infant Jesus. Showcasing a variety of exquisite marbles ranging from soft cream to Maremma red, the interior of the church is adorned with beautiful stained glass windows, priceless frescoes and terracotta sculptures created by Angelo Biancini, all of which contribute to the sanctuary’s extraordinary artistic value.

Of particular note is the Permanent Artistic Nativity, famous for being the most renowned ceramic nativity scene in Liguria. Master potter Eliseo Salino of Albissola skillfully crafted this masterpiece between 1969 and 1970.

In addition, the sanctuary is surrounded by a beautiful botanical garden and a rich nursery filled with rare African and South American specimens, making it a paradise for plant enthusiasts.

The Church of Saints Nazario and Celso in Arenzano is a remarkable testimony to the religious and artistic heritage of the region.

Equipped with eight side altars, the church is adorned with valuable marble, stucco, columns and paintings. The altars pay tribute to St. Joseph and St. Erasmus, protectors of sailors as well as metalworkers and papermakers.

The high altar is adorned with an impressive crucifix made by the famous sculptor Maragliano, complemented by magnificent paintings by Assereto and a marble altarpiece by Solaro and Orsolino dating from 1632.

The interior dome of the church is embellished with frescoes by the famous painter Francesco Semino, who completed his work in 1866. The impressive Mascioni organ, installed in 1961, adds to the church’s rich history.

At Christmas time, the parish puts on display a beautiful Genoese nativity scene with wooden statues from the 18th-century school of Maragliano.

In addition, during the annual patronal feast on July 28, the processional ark, made by A. Brilla in 1874, depicting the martyrdom of Saints Nazario and Celso, is displayed.

The train is just as comfortable. Virtually all trains on the Genoa-Ventimiglia Line stop in Arenzano, and the station is in the center of town.
