Sea, trails and bad weather
For the sea, go between June and September: below Punta Crena lies the Baia dei Saraceni (Bay of the Saracens). From Varigotti the Sentiero del Pellegrino (Pilgrim’s Path) leads to Noli, 2–3 hours one way on a route that is partly steep and rocky: it becomes slippery in the rain, and in summer it’s best to set off early. The coast here is prone to landslides: in 1949 a landslide at Malpasso swept away the railway, which was then moved into a tunnel.
When to go to Varigotti
For the sea, go between June and September; for the trail and the Manie plateau, choose spring or autumn. In August there’s the Festa di San Lorenzo. In Liguria, alerts for rain and thunderstorms are issued by ARPAL, with three levels: yellow, orange and red alerts. Check the level on the official Allerta Liguria website (in Italian) before setting off on hikes or boat trips.
