Every year, on the Sunday of Corpus Domini, the centre of Diano Marina is covered with carpets of petals: geometric patterns, sacred figures and decorations that volunteers create overnight and that are meant to last only a short time. The Infiorata is the town’s most heartfelt festival and one of the most spectacular on the Riviera di Ponente. This guide explains when it takes place, where to see it, how the day unfolds and how to plan your trip.

What the Infiorata of Diano Marina is

The infiorata is a tradition linked to the feast of Corpus Domini, when the procession with the Blessed Sacrament passes through the streets of the town. To prepare its route, the streets are decorated with carpets made of fresh flower petals, laid out following designs drawn up in advance.

In Diano Marina the Infiorata has been held since 1963 and has grown to cover about 2,000 square metres of the centre. All the work is done by volunteers: hundreds of hands cut the petals, sort them by colour and lay them, creating a flowered route between the main square and the nearby streets. It is ephemeral art that can only be admired for a short time.

The programme of the day

The programme changes little from year to year. In 2026 it went as follows:

  • Saturday evening, from 8pm: the laying of the petals and designs begins in piazza Martiri della Libertà and the streets of the centre. Work continues through the night until first light.
  • Sunday, 10am: solemn Mass in the parish church of Sant’Antonio Abate.
  • Sunday, around 11am: solemn procession through the streets of the centre, with the town band, local dignitaries, the confraternities and the children of first communion and confirmation.
  • Sunday, 6pm: infiorata and festivities in the village of Diano Calderina.

Each year’s official programme is published a few weeks in advance on the town’s tourism website and on the Riviera dei Fiori website: check it before you set off.

When to go to see the carpets

The best time to see the finished carpets is on Sunday morning, before the procession: the designs are complete and the colours are still fresh. If you want to see how they are made, come to the centre on Saturday evening, when the volunteers start laying the petals. It is a different show but just as interesting.

Arrive early: the square and the streets of the centre are small and fill up by late morning. Remember that the carpets are fragile, so walk only where permitted and do not step on the designs.

The infiorata of Diano Calderina

In the afternoon the festival moves up into the hills, to the village of Diano Calderina, where another infiorata, organised by the Amici di Calderina e Muratori, is held at 6pm. It is more intimate than the one in the centre and lets you combine the festival with a walk among the olive trees. Along via Diano Calderina there is also the turn-off for the Torre dell’Alpicella, the highest point of Capo Berta.

Arriving and parking on the day of the festival

On the day of the Infiorata the centre of Diano Marina is very crowded and several streets are taken up by the carpets. The easiest way to arrive is by train: “Diano” station is outside the centre, on corso Luigia Saguato, and a Riviera Trasporti shuttle bus takes you into town. The station forecourt is a free car park.

By car, leave the A10 at San Bartolomeo al Mare. The free car parks listed by the town include via Gaggero, piazza Papa Giovanni XXIII, via Villebone, via Sottana alla Foce and via Lucus Bormani; the pay-and-display ones closest to the centre are piazza J. Virgilio, piazza Maglione and largo Torino. On the day it is best to arrive early in the morning.

If you want to stay for the weekend, book ahead: the Infiorata falls at a time when the bathing season has already begun. All the information about the town is in the guide to Diano Marina.
