Boats, Palmaria and the sea

Boats leave Portovenere for Palmaria Island, the Cinque Terre and Lerici: when the sea is rough, sailings may be suspended, so check at the pier on the morning itself. On Palmaria the loop trail has steep descents: in the rain it becomes slippery. Byron’s Grotto has collapsed: what remains are the rock terraces below the walls, which should be avoided when the sea is heavy.

In Liguria, alerts for rain and thunderstorms are issued by ARPAL, with three levels: yellow, orange and red alerts. Check the level on the official Allerta Liguria website (in Italian) before setting off on hikes or boat trips.

When to go to Portovenere

For the sea and boat trips, go from June to September; July and August are the busiest months. To walk on Palmaria and visit the village with fewer crowds, choose April, May, September or October. On rainy days, in Le Grazie, there is the museum of the Roman villa of Varignano.
