Levanto has the climate of the eastern Riviera coast: mild winters, hot summers and rain concentrated between October and January. July and August are the driest months, and the sea reaches 24–25 °C on average. For Levanto, the table uses La Spezia’s averages.

Sea, wind and surf

In summer the sea at Levanto is often calm, suitable for children too in the more sheltered stretches. In autumn and winter, with the libeccio (south-west wind) and the maestrale (north-west wind), the waves roll in that have made Levanto one of Italy’s best-known surf spots: in the table for the coming days, check the wind direction and strength. When to go to Levanto

For the sea, the best months are June to September; in July and August it is busier, on the beach and on the trains to the Cinque Terre. For the trails and to use Levanto as a base for the Cinque Terre, choose May, June or September. In autumn and winter the surfers arrive and the town is quiet.

Weather alerts and bad weather

In Liguria, alerts for rain and thunderstorms are issued by ARPAL, with three levels: yellow, orange and red alerts. Check the level on the official Allerta Liguria website (in Italian). During an alert, the Cinque Terre trails, including the one to Monterosso, can be closed by ordinance: the status of the paths is on the Cinque Terre National Park website. When the sea is rough, boats may be suspended. The train, on the other hand, gets you to Monterosso in a few minutes even when it rains.
