Welcome to Sestri Levante

The town of two seas

Sestri Levante is the “town of two seas”: its old centre sits on a narrow strip of land between two bays, with a green headland closing the view out to sea. On the west side is the long, sandy Bay of Fables (Baia delle Favole); on the east the small Bay of Silence (Baia del Silenzio), where pastel houses come right down to the beach. It lies on the Gulf of Tigullio, on the Riviera di Levante, roughly halfway between Genoa and La Spezia.

The Romans knew it as Segesta Tigulliorum, and from the 12th century it belonged to Genoa, which built a castle on the upper part of the headland that locals simply call “the island”. In 1833 a young Hans Christian Andersen stayed here, and the town has adopted him: the Andersen Prize for children’s literature dates from 1967 and every June there is an Andersen Festival.

With about 17,000 residents, Sestri Levante works both as a beach destination and as a practical base for day trips. The station is on the Genoa–La Spezia line, boats run to Portofino and the Cinque Terre, and in 2026 the Cinque Terre Express started running directly from here. You can see the old town on foot in half a day; allow two or three days if you also want the beaches and the Punta Manara walk.

Where is Sestri Levante?

Sestri Levante is in Liguria (Riviera di Levante, Golfo del Tigullio, province of Genoa).

What to see

What to see in Sestri Levante

Sestri Levante and its two bays from above

Almost everything worth seeing is between the two bays and on the headland. The historic centre is a limited traffic zone (ZTL), so park outside it and walk: the bays are a short, flat walk from the station.

Wooden boats and colourful houses in the Baia del Silenzio

Bay of Silence

This is the postcard view of Sestri Levante: a crescent of sand about 300 metres long, wooden fishing boats pulled up on the beach and a row of pastel houses behind. The poet Giovanni Descalzo gave it its name in 1919. It is lovely out of season and at sunset, when the beach empties.

For several summers now, access in July and August has been capped: in 2026 no more than 450 people could be on the beach at the same time, with entry controlled from 8.30am to 5.30pm through three gates. Entry is free and there is nothing to book. Rules, times and practical tips are in our guide to the Bay of Silence.

Bay of Fables

The western bay is the town’s long beach, around 1.5 km of fine sand and shingle with a gently shelving seabed, which makes it one of the easiest beaches in Liguria for small children. There are beach clubs (stabilimenti) with loungers to rent and free public stretches, the marina at the headland end and the seafront promenade behind.

The name is not Andersen’s own: TV presenter Enzo Tortora coined it in the 1950s during a broadcast of the quiz show “Campanile Sera” from Sestri, as a tribute to the Danish writer.

The peninsula and Baia del Silenzio of Sestri Levante

The headland and its park

The headland is largely green, covered with trees and gardens. From the Bay of Silence, walk up towards the church of San Nicolò and follow the lanes around the point: you get views of both bays and, on clear days, along the coast. Much of the upper part is the private park of the Grand Hotel dei Castelli.

Former Convent of the Annunziata

At the tip of the headland, between the Bay of Silence and the open sea, stands a 15th-century convent founded by the Dominicans. Restored by the town, it now hosts exhibitions, conferences and events, including the Andersen Prize ceremony. Even when it is closed, the walk is worth it for the view of the bay from the terraces and rocks in front. On the rocks below is a bronze statue of a young fisherman casting his net.

Romanesque church of San Nicola dell'Isola in Sestri Levante

Church of San Nicolò dell'Isola

Sestri’s oldest church was built in 1151 in Romanesque style, altered in the 15th century and again in the Baroque period. Restorations in 1912 and 1928 removed the Baroque additions and brought back its medieval look, with three naves divided by stone columns. It is on the way up the headland and is often open only for services, so plan on seeing the exterior and the churchyard.

Torre Marconi and the Castles

Between 1925 and 1929 the Turin industrialist Riccardo Gualino built a group of medieval-style castles on the headland, which became a hotel in 1950. In the park, just outside the old walls, stands the tower associated with Guglielmo Marconi’s radio experiments, on the best viewpoint of the peninsula. The tower and park are not open to the public; they can only be seen during special openings such as the FAI spring days.

Palazzo Fascie with its tower in Sestri Levante

Palazzo Fascie and the MuSel

On Corso Colombo, a few steps from the Bay of Fables, Palazzo Fascie houses the public library, the tourist office and, on the third and fourth floors, the MuSel, the archaeological and town museum. Displays run from prehistory to the Middle Ages, including the Roman boundary stone from Monte Ramaceto, finds from ancient local mines and from the seabed, then a 20th-century section on emigration, war, shipyards and the birth of tourism.

The museum lists daily opening from 10am to 1pm and 2pm to 5pm, and a full ticket costs €5. Hours change with the seasons, so check the town’s official tourism site before you go.

Palazzo Durazzo Pallavicini in Sestri Levante

Palazzo Durazzo Pallavicini

This 17th-century palazzo on Piazza Matteotti is the town hall. The square, with the basilica next door, is the heart of the old town and a good starting point for the lanes.

Basilica of Santa Maria di Nazareth

Also on Piazza Matteotti, the main church was begun in 1604 on the site of an older chapel; the columned portico on the façade is 19th century. It has been a minor basilica since 1962.

Via XXV Aprile towards the Baia del Silenzio in Sestri Levante

Via XXV Aprile and the old lanes

Sestri’s main “carrugio” is Via XXV Aprile, running through the centre from the square towards the Bay of Silence. Look up and around: painted façades with trompe-l’oeil architecture, carved slate doorways and friezes, old-fashioned grocers, pastry shops and focaccia bakeries. It is the street for an evening stroll, when the shops are open and the beach has emptied.

Galleria Rizzi building in Sestri Levante

Galleria Rizzi

Near the Bay of Silence, this house museum opened in 1960 under the will of Marcello Rizzi and keeps the family’s collection of paintings, ceramics and furniture. Opening days are limited and change from year to year: ask at the tourist office.

Street with colourful houses in Riva Trigoso

Riva Trigoso

Beyond Punta Manara, the village of Riva Trigoso has a wide beach, colourful houses and a more local feel. It is also home to a large shipyard building naval vessels. In July it hosts the Sagra del Bagnun, a festival of the sailors’ anchovy soup. It is one stop by train, a short drive, or a walk over the headland.

Beaches in Sestri Levante

Sestri’s beaches are wider and sandier than most in Liguria. The two main ones are the Bay of Fables, with beach clubs and free stretches, and the Bay of Silence, mostly free but capped in summer. Riva Trigoso has a long beach of coarse sand with both beach clubs and free areas.

Where to stay

Where to stay in Sestri Levante

There are three main areas. The old town and the Bay of Silence are the most atmospheric and the most expensive: ideal for couples who want to walk out in the evening, less so if you have a car, because of the ZTL. The Bay of Fables and seafront area is the most practical for families, with the beach in front, services and parking nearby. Near the station prices are lower and it is handy if you plan train day trips to the Cinque Terre and Portofino.

Riva Trigoso is a quieter, often cheaper alternative with its own beach and station. For July, August and the Andersen Festival, book well ahead.

Getting there

How to get to Sestri Levante

By car

Take the A12 Genoa–Livorno motorway and exit at Sestri Levante: the toll booth is about 1 km from the centre. The old town is a limited traffic zone (ZTL): set your satnav to a car park, not to your accommodation, and ask your host whether they have parking or a permit.

By train

Sestri Levante station is on the Genoa–La Spezia line, within walking distance of the bays. From Genova Brignole it takes 45 minutes to about 1 hour 20, depending on the train; from La Spezia Centrale 30–40 minutes on direct regional trains. From 14 March to 1 November 2026 some Cinque Terre Express trains were extended to Sestri Levante: check times on the Trenitalia website.

By boat

The Servizio Marittimo del Tigullio links Sestri Levante with Portofino and San Fruttuoso, with more departures at weekends and in high season, and with the Cinque Terre from May to September. Boats can be cancelled in rough seas: check the timetable at traghettiportofino.it.

By plane

The nearest airport is Genoa Cristoforo Colombo, about 60 km away: continue by car on the motorway or by train from Genoa. Pisa, about 110 km away, is the main alternative.

Parking

Almost all parking is paid. Blue-line spaces usually cost €1.50–2 per hour and are paid until the evening, later in summer; pay at the meter or by app. The closest car parks to the centre are Piazza Aldo Moro, on the edge of the ZTL, and the underground Sant’Anna car park at the end of the Bay of Fables. Further out, near the railway, the free Baden Powell car park is linked to the centre by shuttle. In August, arrive early in the morning.

Walks and hikes

Hike from Riva Trigoso to the Baia del Silenzio in Sestri Levante

The classic walk is the Punta Manara loop, around the wooded headland between Sestri and Riva Trigoso, which can only be reached on foot. Start in the old town near Via XXV Aprile and climb through Mediterranean scrub to the Bivacco Manara, a shaded picnic area about 3 km out, then on to the point with the remains of a watchtower. The full loop is 7–8 km, about 2.5 hours of walking with 250 m of ascent (waymark: two solid red squares).

On clear days the Telegrafo viewpoint looks out to Corsica and the Tuscan islands. On Monte Castello, the highest point, are the ruins of a 12th-century Genoese castle. The path down to the Ciappa du Lu cove is steep: only take it in proper footwear. Fit walkers can continue past Punta Baffe to Moneglia, a full-day hike, and come back by train.

What to eat in Sestri Levante

The food is classic Tigullio: focaccia, vegetable pies, pesto, anchovies and other oily fish. The signature dish is bagnun from Riva Trigoso, an anchovy soup with tomato, garlic, olive oil and ship’s biscuits, first cooked aboard the leudi, Liguria’s traditional cargo boats. Try it at the Sagra del Bagnun in July, when volunteers hand out thousands of free portions. Anchovies are also the stars of the Anchovy Festival in June.

Events in Sestri Levante

  • Andersen Festival (early June): theatre, circus, dance and family events all over town, free of charge. In 2026 it ran from 4 to 7 June.
  • Sagra del Bagnun (second-to-last weekend of July) in Riva Trigoso, with free tastings and fireworks.
  • Barcarolata (last Sunday of July): a night parade of decorated boats in the Bay of Silence, followed by fireworks. In 2026 it was on 26 July.

Day trips from Sestri Levante

  • Lavagna and Chiavari: Lavagna’s seafront and Chiavari’s arcades and market, a few minutes away by train.
  • Moneglia: a seaside village with a good beach, by train, or by car via the Aurelia: the coastal tunnel road has been closed since 2025 and is not expected to reopen before 2027.
  • Portofino: by boat from Sestri’s harbour with the Servizio Marittimo del Tigullio, or by train to Santa Margherita and then bus.
  • Santa Margherita Ligure and Rapallo: promenades, villas and harbours of the Tigullio, on the same railway line.
  • Levanto: a wide beach and the northern gateway to the Cinque Terre, easy by train.
  • Monterosso and the Cinque Terre: in 2026 with the direct Cinque Terre Express from Sestri, or by boat in summer.
