The beaches of Varazze are why most people come here in summer: a long town beach right in the centre, with three stretches holding the Blue Flag, about forty beach clubs, a few free beaches and, towards Cogoleto, the rocky coves below the Passeggiata Europa. In winter the same coast becomes one of the best-known surf spots in Italy. This guide helps you choose where to lay your towel.

The town beaches

Varazze beach and coastline

The town beach is split in two by the Teiro stream, which flows into the sea right in the centre. The beaches are named after it: Ponente Teiro (west) and Levante Teiro (east), both Blue Flag in 2026. They are the most convenient, a few minutes from the station, bars and shops.

Ponente Teiro

SandBeach clubsFamily friendly

West of the stream the beach is mostly sand and the seabed slopes gently. It is the best choice for families with small children. Almost all of it is taken by beach clubs (stabilimenti), many with play areas and family services. You can book a sunbed and umbrella directly or through your hotel, which often has a deal with a nearby club.

Levante Teiro

SandPebbles

To the east the beach is mixed sand and pebbles, and the water gets deep more quickly. It suits swimmers and older kids. Some clubs here also offer sports and lessons in the water.

Free beaches in the centre

They exist, but they are small stretches between one club and the next, and on summer weekends they are full by mid-morning. If you want a free spot in the centre, arrive early or go on a weekday.

Arrestra and Punta dell'Aspera

Rocks and sea at Varazze through the branches

Heading east, the landscape changes: the coast rises, rocks appear and Mediterranean scrub takes over. Arrestra is Varazze’s third Blue Flag beach in 2026. Around Punta dell’Aspera and Punta Arrestra there are small inlets and sea caves, some best seen from the water by kayak or SUP. This is the area for clear water and a bit more space.

The coves of the Passeggiata Europa

Past the marina starts the Passeggiata Europa, the path along the old railway line to Cogoleto. Below it, especially around Piani d’Invrea, there are coves of rock and pebbles where you can swim without paying anything.

  • Getting there: on foot or by bike along the promenade; the way down is by small paths and steps between the rocks.
  • What to bring: water shoes, water and shade: there are no facilities.
  • Best for: couples, swimmers and snorkellers. Not suitable for small children or anyone with limited mobility.

In the other direction, towards Celle Ligure, the seafront path on the old railway runs above more small rocky beaches, including the Spiaggia dei Bergamaschi, halfway between the two towns.

Surfing in Varazze

Sunset over the sea at Varazze

Varazze is known well beyond Italy for its surf. The main wave is called La Secca and breaks over a rocky reef near the pier: a long right and a shorter, faster left. Italy’s national tourism site, italia.it, lists it among the best surf destinations in Europe.

  • When: with southerly swells, so mainly late summer, autumn and winter. In summer the sea is often flat.
  • Who for: experienced surfers. Shallow rocky bottom, a crowded line-up and a strong local crew.
  • At night: the pier is lit by floodlights and you can surf after sunset with a membership card from the UISP sports association.
  • Non-surfers: on swell days the promenade by the pier is the best place to watch.

In summer, with no waves, the same area is just another beach. Beginners are better off learning on small days with an instructor.

Practical tips

  • Train: the station is a short walk from the sea; in summer it is the easiest way to avoid parking hassles.
  • Car: parking near the sea is almost all paid and fills up early. Arrive in the morning.
  • When: June and September are the best months, with warm water and fewer people than in July and August.
  • Rules: check the town’s beach regulations on site, for example on dogs and swimming flags.
