Montemarcello’s climate month by month

Montemarcello is a walled hill village, a hamlet of Ameglia, about 15 km from La Spezia. There are no official averages for Montemarcello: the table starts from the La Spezia figures and takes off a few degrees for the altitude, so it is an estimate, and there is no sea-temperature column. Evenings are cooler than on the coast. For the weather in the city, see the La Spezia weather page.

Monthly averages for La Spezia (air temperatures 2004–2020). Source: climieviaggi.it. For Montemarcello, at about 250 m above sea level, the temperatures are an estimate: they are the La Spezia figures, on the coast about 15 km away, with 0.6 °C less for every 100 m of altitude; the rainy days are those of La Spezia. Treat them as a guide: in the valleys nights are usually cooler and the gap between day and night wider.

Trails and viewpoints when the weather changes

The trails of the Montemarcello-Magra-Vara Park start in the village or pass through it: bring hiking shoes, water and a waterproof jacket in autumn and winter, a hat and sunglasses in summer, and check the weather alerts before setting out. After rain, wait for the ground to dry and don’t count on tight timings. Trail 436 to Punta Corvo is closed by order no. 3 of 12 April 2023 because of the risk of falling rocks, and the Park still lists it as closed in October 2026: check the order of the Municipality of Ameglia and the Park’s notice. All the routes, with times and closures, are on our page about the trails of Montemarcello and the Caprione.

For the sea, go to Bocca di Magra, the other hamlet of Ameglia: Montemarcello has no beaches. In Liguria, alerts for rain and thunderstorms are issued by ARPAL, on three levels: yellow, orange and red. Check them on the official Allerta Liguria website (in Italian) before you drive out or set off on a trail.

If it rains in Montemarcello

The village can be seen in an hour or two: the 15th-century gate, the square, the grid of lanes and the church of San Pietro Apostolo, with its marble altarpiece of 1529 (opening times are not confirmed). On via Don Calisto De’ Marchi are the lecterns of the Strada Poetica, to walk when the sky clears. The art park La Marrana can only be visited on specific occasions, so don’t count on it: check its website. The viewpoints dedicated to the poets are best on clear days, with the Gulf, the islands of Tino and Tinetto and the Apuan Alps in view.

When to go to Montemarcello

For walking, the best months are April to June and September to October. In July and August avoid the hot hours. In winter the village is quiet but not every restaurant and accommodation is open. The Notte Romantica of the Borghi più belli d’Italia takes place in June (the 2026 date is not confirmed).
