Sea, trails and boats

Fossola beach, east of the little harbour, is small and made of large stones. The storm surges of 3 and 5 November 2023 shrank it a great deal, and the access paths may be closed for works: check the Comune’s notices. Riomaggiore is a stop for the boats to La Spezia and Portovenere, which may be suspended when the sea is rough.

In Liguria, alerts for rain and thunderstorms are issued by ARPAL, with three levels: yellow, orange and red alerts. Check the level on the official Allerta Liguria website (in Italian). During an alert, the Cinque Terre municipalities can close the trails by ordinance, and the Via dell’Amore between Riomaggiore and Manarola closes even with a yellow alert. The status of the routes is on the Cinque Terre National Park website. On 15 November 2025, for example, a mayoral ordinance closed all of Riomaggiore’s municipal trails because of an orange alert. In good weather, the trail climbs to the Sanctuary of Montenero.

When to go to Riomaggiore

Riomaggiore is crowded from May to September. For the sea, choose June or September; for the trails, April, May and October. In winter it’s quiet and mild.
