Ruins, alleys and rain

The village, abandoned after the 1887 earthquake and reborn from 1959 as an artists’ village, is entirely pedestrian: you leave the car at the entrance, where spaces are limited. When it rains the stone alleys and steps get slippery, so wear shoes with a good grip. The church of Sant’Egidio is unsafe and can only be seen from outside, like the roofless oratory of San Giovanni Battista. On clear days, climb to the garden among the ruins, with its panoramic terraces at the top of the village.

On rainy days the visit centres on the artists’ studios, where ceramics, painting and crafts are made, and the Osteria degli Artisti, the village’s long-standing meeting place. The best months are spring and autumn, with pleasant temperatures and fewer people. In summer the studios are open but the village is busier: go in the morning or towards evening, then head down to the sea.
