Dolceacqua's climate month by month

Dolceacqua lies in the lower Nervia valley, about 10 km from the sea at Ventimiglia, split by the stream into two parts joined by the humpback bridge. There are no official averages for the village: the table uses the Sanremo figures, because at this altitude the difference from the coast is minimal. Monet arrived here in February 1884 and painted the bridge and the castle. For the weather by the sea, see the Ventimiglia weather page.

Monthly averages for Sanremo (air temperatures 2004–2020). Source: climieviaggi.it. For Dolceacqua, at about 51 m above sea level, the temperatures are an estimate: they are the Sanremo figures, on the coast about 11 km away, with 0.6 °C less for every 100 m of altitude; the rainy days are those of Sanremo. Treat them as a guide: in the valleys nights are usually cooler and the gap between day and night wider.

Castle, cycle path and rain

The Doria Castle is a good visit even in bad weather: inside there are multimedia rooms on its history and a film about Monet, while the panoramic walkway looks over the valley, the sea and the Rossese vineyards, best on clear days. Opening times change with the season: it’s all explained in our guide to the Doria Castle. When the sun is out you can ride down to the sea on the cycle path along the Nervia in under 20 minutes.

If it rains in Dolceacqua

Besides the castle, when it rains you can go into the church of Sant’Antonio Abate, with Ludovico Brea’s polyptych of Santa Devota (1515), and stop at the regional wine shop in the old part, the Terra, to discover Rossese di Dolceacqua. The scasasse, covered passages between the houses, give shelter from the rain. A few kilometres away are Apricale and Rocchetta Nervina.

When to go to Dolceacqua

The best months are spring and autumn. In January, on the Sunday closest to the 20th, there is the San Sebastiano procession; around 25 April the alleys fill with flowers for Carugi in Fiore; 16 August is the michetta festival, followed in the second half of the month by fireworks over the castle. On the last Sunday of the month there is a market. In Liguria, alerts for rain and thunderstorms are issued by ARPAL: check them on the official Allerta Liguria website (in Italian) before you set off.
