Where to sleep in Genoa

Historic center, old port, residential area or fishing village. The guide to choosing the perfect accommodation for your holiday in Genoa.

Booking.com

Although Genoa is the capital of Liguria, it is not as big a city as you might think, if you are looking for comfortable accommodation to visit it.

The main attractions are in fact concentrated within a few kilometers between the historic center and the ancient port.

However, based on the type of holiday you want and your needs, there are some precautions to take and the recommended areas.

The vast majority of travelers choose to stay in the downtown and ancient port areas, but if you have special needs, this may not always be the case.

Here is the guide to choose the best hotels, bed & breakfast and apartments to sleep in Genoa.

Old Town

sleeping in genoa ancient port

The historic center is mainly divided into 2 areas: the molo district, medieval and made up of many narrow alleys. And the Maddalena district, which is the baroque quarter of Genoa.

The area of the historic center of Genoa is certainly the most fascinating, where you can experience the city in an authentic way among the most beautiful buildings, the oldest churches, the historical museums and wander through the alleys in search of the best Genoese shops.

If you want to stay in a convenient location for all the attractions and museums and be convenient to reach the Piazza Principe train station, choosing the historic center is a great idea.

The historic center is as convenient for getting around by public transport as it is complicated if you want to reach Genoa by car.

It is not very common for hotels and apartments in the historic center to be reachable by car or in any case equipped with parking. They usually have agreements with city center car parks, but keep in mind that you may have to walk a lot to reach your vehicle.

Choosing to stay in the historic center of Genoa will also allow you to be a stone’s throw from via xx settembre, from the nightlife venues and from the squares where the Genoese meet in their free time.

But be careful! If you want to go to bed early and sleep in absolute silence this may not be the best area of Genoa for you.

Old Port

The ancient port of Genoa is always mentioned in the guides as a separate area from the historic center, especially for the presence of marine-themed attractions such as the aquarium , Galata museum of the sea and the biosphere.

Indeed, travelers visiting the aquarium or embarking on a cruise often stay here.

In reality, the area of the ancient port is adjacent to the center, just as convenient to all the attractions, even if to reach the Rolli palaces and other museums you have to take a few more steps.

In ancient times it was a degraded and poorly frequented area, but since the early 90s this area has been completely revalued. You can choose it for your stay without problems, counting on numerous hotels and apartments of all categories.
