What to see in Levanto

All it takes to discover the best of Levanto is a day and some good advice on what to visit.

The municipality of Levanto hides within its borders numerous attractions and places of interest, including:

Medieval Loggia

loggia-medievale-levanto

The Medieval Loggia is an intriguing reminder of the city’s rich medieval history. This fascinating 13th-century building whispers the stories of a bygone era and is an essential visit for anyone seeking to plumb Levanto’s ancient roots.

The Loggia was initially built as a form of defense and as a gathering place for the older merchants of Levanto. However, over the years, it has channeled its multifaceted appeal as a market, courthouse, and even a quarantine station during times of plague. Today, this historic building stands in Piazza della Loggia, inviting explorers to step back in time.

The Medieval Loggia is a testament to medieval architectural prowess. Featuring a unique blend of Genoese and Roman styles, the structure’s fascinating arches, vibrant frescoes, and stone bell tower make silent but powerful narrators of Levanto’s bygone years. Careful restoration has maintained the majestic simplicity reflected in its stone walls and timeless arches.

Levanto Castle

Castello_di_Levanto

Also known as San Giorgio Castle, Monale Castle, or Malaspina Castle, Levanto Castle sits on a hill overlooking the picturesque town of Levanto and stands as a majestic testament to the region’s medieval past.

Presumably built between the 11th and 12th centuries, Levanto Castle served as a fortification against pirate invasions. Its strategic location atop a hill provided it with an excellent vantage point, making it one of the most significant defensive structures along the Ligurian coast during the Middle Ages. The fortifications were later strengthened by the Republic of Genoa when Levanto came under its rule in the 13th century.

True to its defensive nature, the castle has an imposing rectangular structure and thick stone walls. The highlight, however, is the central tower, an imposing sight that offers sweeping views of Levanto and the beautiful Ligurian Sea.

In addition to its historical charm, Levanto Castle offers some of the most scenic views in the region.

Today the Levanto Castle is dressed up again, offering itself as a splendid venue for numerous cultural and artistic events. The castle’s extensive grounds host outdoor concerts, art exhibitions and themed festivals, offering a unique blend of historical background and contemporary entertainment.

Medieval Walls

mura-medievali-levanto

A particularly noteworthy part of Levanto’s historical heritage are the Medieval Walls, an intriguing relic of the past that wraps around the historic center, inviting visitors to take a glimpse into Levanto’s bygone days.

Built mainly in the Middle Ages and continuously fortified until the 16th century, these walls played a crucial role in safeguarding the city from pirate invasions and other maritime threats.

The defense system included the city wall, the castle tower, the clock tower, and several gates of which we can still visit the Moat gate.

While their role was primarily defensive, Levanto’s walls are also an outstanding example of medieval building techniques. Made from local stone, they feature integrated garrisons and lookouts, reflecting the strategic planning of the time. They still stand firm today, a testament to the durability and excellence of ancient engineering.

The tour of the city walls starts from the castle tower. From the moat gate, however, the path to Monterosso begins.

Le Grottesche

Grotesques are curious frescoes, amusing caricatures that date back to the 16th century and are an expression of a decorative tradition that was very popular in Liguria.

These particular frescoes are located at the corner of Garibaldi Street and Vinzoni Street. You can see them by looking at the frontispiece of the first building.

Chiesa di Sant'Andrea

chiesa-di-sant-andrea-levanto
