Cinque Terre in One Day: an itinerary that works now

Yes, you can see Cinque Terre in one day, but not the way most guides describe it: since 10 September 2026 the trail between Corniglia, Vernazza and Monterosso has been closed, so the day works by train. The route that works: Monterosso, Vernazza, Manarola, Riomaggiore, from 8.30 am to 6 pm, about two hours in each village. Below you get the timetable, the cost worked out in euros and plan B for rain, weather alerts and engineering works. Updated 25 October 2026.

  • Route: Monterosso, Vernazza, Manarola, Riomaggiore, all by train, four villages in about 9.5 hours
  • Cost: €25 in single tickets on the cheapest day type, or the Train Card from €22; from 2 November the Card costs €17.30
  • Trails: Corniglia–Vernazza–Monterosso closed since 10 September; Via dell’Amore open, but only with a Card and a booked slot
  • Via dell’Amore: one-way, Riomaggiore to Manarola; from 26 October open 9 am–6 pm, last entry 5.30 pm
  • Avoid: the RFI engineering weekends of 14–15 November and 19–20 December 2026, 9–10 January and 6–7 February 2027
  • Corniglia: in one day, skip it unless you cut another village

Before you go: what is open and what is not

Three things change the day more than anything else. Check them the day before on the Cinque Terre National Park website.

  • Closed trails: the Sentiero Verde Azzurro between Corniglia, Vernazza and Monterosso has been “closed and not passable” since 10 September 2026, pending geological checks. The Park has announced no reopening date. The coastal section Corniglia–Manarola has also been closed for landslides for some time. More in our page on the Cinque Terre trails.
  • Via dell’Amore: open, but you enter only with a Cinque Terre Card (Trekking or Train) and a booked time slot, even if you already bought the card. It is one-way, from Riomaggiore to Manarola, about 30 minutes.
  • Weather alerts: with an orange or red alert the trails close and the Trekking and Train cards are not sold. See below for what to do.

The north-to-south route hour by hour

Monterosso al Mare with its turquoise sea

This is the basic itinerary, with no paid trails. Start from Levanto or La Spezia and be in Monterosso by 8.30. Train times are approximate: check the day’s timetable in the planner below.

Stop What to do How long Getting there
8.30 Monterosso Fegina beach, old town, the black-and-white striped church of San Giovanni Battista, the Giant statue 1 h 45 About 20 minutes by train from La Spezia, about 5 from Levanto
10.15 Vernazza Harbour, the seafront church of Santa Margherita, the climb to Doria Castle (paid entry), lunch 2 h 30 About 5 minutes by train from Monterosso
1.00 pm Manarola Tower-houses on the cliff, walk towards Punta Bonfiglio for the classic photo, church of San Lorenzo 2 h 15 About 8 minutes by train from Vernazza
3.45 pm Riomaggiore Via Colombo, the Marina, the castle, the mural on the town hall 2 h About 3 minutes by train from Manarola
5.45 pm Return Train to La Spezia or Levanto about 10 minutes to La Spezia After 7.30 pm the ticket is always €5

At this pace you have time for a proper lunch. If trains are full or late, take half an hour off Riomaggiore. Platforms are busiest between 10 am and 4 pm.

In season there is a boat alternative for one leg. Until 1 November 2026 line 02 serves Monterosso, Vernazza, Manarola and Riomaggiore, but not Corniglia, and it is cancelled in rough seas. The day ticket costs €42, which is not worth it for a single leg. Details on the ferries page.

South-to-north variant with the Via dell’Amore

Manarola on its cliff and the sea

If you arrive from Pisa, Florence or Rome you get off at La Spezia: reverse the route and walk the Via dell’Amore, which can only be walked from Riomaggiore to Manarola.

  • 8.30: train from La Spezia to Riomaggiore, about 10 minutes. Book the Via dell’Amore time slot online first, for example around 9.30.
  • 9.30: Via dell’Amore, about 30 minutes, to Manarola.
  • 10.15–12.30: Manarola, then train to Vernazza.
  • 12.45–3.15 pm: Vernazza and lunch, then train to Monterosso.
  • 3.30–5.45 pm: Monterosso, beach or old town, then the train back to La Spezia, about 20 minutes.

The Train Card includes the Via dell’Amore, but you must still book your slot: entry is limited. More in the Via dell’Amore at Manarola. From 26 October 2026 to 28 March 2027 the last entry is 5.30 pm.

Hotels in Cinque Terre for an overnight stay

What it costs: the sums

The day has 5 train rides: La Spezia–Monterosso, Monterosso–Vernazza, Vernazza–Manarola, Manarola–Riomaggiore and the return. The Cinque Terre ticket costs €5, €8 or €10 per ride depending on Trenitalia’s calendar of day types A, B and C (valid until 1 November 2026). The adult one-day Train Card costs €22, €29.50 or €35 on the same day types.

Day type 5 single tickets Train Card With Via dell’Amore: singles + €10 Trekking Card
A (low) €25 €22 €35 against €22 for the Card
B (medium) €40 €29.50 €50 against €29.50
C (high) €50 €35 €60 against €35

With 5 rides the Train Card always wins, even on the cheapest day type, and with the Via dell’Amore the saving is clear. If you add Corniglia you make 6 rides: €30, €48 or €60 in single tickets. From 2 November to 31 December 2026 the Card has a single price of €17.30 for an adult, so you do not need to check the day type. We have not verified single-ticket prices after 1 November: check Trenitalia. The card does not need validating: write your name and surname on it and carry ID. Prices for children and families are on the Card page.

Pick the day and the villages you want: the planner uses the RFI timetable and tells you which day type the date falls in. After 1 November the extra 5 Terre Express no longer runs and trains are less frequent: check the day’s timetable.

What if you want to walk a little?

On a one-day trip trails are a bonus. These are reported open by unofficial sources (1 October 2026): always check the day’s status on the Park site and wear closed shoes with a lugged sole.

  • Via Beccara, Manarola–Riomaggiore: about 1.5 km and an hour, steep with steps. It replaces the last train ride. We do not know if it requires the Card: check.
  • Levanto–Monterosso: about 6 km, 2 h 45–3 h. Leave Levanto early and reach Monterosso around 11: the day shrinks, so do only three villages.

Corniglia: skip it or not

Corniglia on its cliff at sunset

Corniglia is the only village not on the sea: it sits on a headland, 377 steps from the station (the Lardarina stairway) or a few minutes by ATC shuttle. Shuttle tickets cannot be bought on board; the Card covers it. There is no beach and no boat landing. In one day, skip it: to fit it in you would take an hour from another village. For next time: Corniglia guide and the Lardarina page.

If it rains or there is a weather alert

In light rain trains run and the villages can be visited: bring an umbrella and choose three stops instead of four. With strong wind and rough seas the ferries stop.

With an orange or red alert things change: trails and Via dell’Amore closed, and Trekking and Train cards not sold. If you already had the card, the rules provide a refund in orange or red alert cases, following the Park’s procedure. What to do:

  • Change the date if you can. A card bought on the Park’s website can be moved once, at least 24 hours before and within the same price band.
  • If you stay, spend the day in La Spezia: the CAMeC is free with the Card, and the civic museums have a reduced ticket.

When to avoid this day

On RFI works weekends trains are suspended for 48 hours between Corniglia and La Spezia: 14–15 November, 19–20 December 2026, 9–10 January and 6–7 February 2027. On those days Riomaggiore and Manarola cannot be reached by train and this itinerary does not work; Friday to Sunday the Levanto–La Spezia line is also suspended from 10.30 pm to 6.30 am. Fall back on Levanto, Monterosso and Vernazza, or move the trip. Check for a replacement bus service.

From 2 November the ferry line is replaced by a single daily tour (operating days to be checked) and days are shorter: start early.

Where you are coming from

  • From La Spezia or Levanto: the best base. Choose the north-south or south-north version.
  • From Pisa: direct train to La Spezia in 45 minutes–1 h 30. Use the south-north version.
  • From Florence: a few direct regional trains to La Spezia in about 2 h 30, not every day. It is 5 hours of train in all: do three villages.
  • From Genoa: direct trains to Monterosso or Levanto in 1–2 hours. A good base for the north-south version.
  • From Milan, Rome or Nice: too far for a comfortable day trip; sleep at least one night in La Spezia or Levanto. See how to get to Cinque Terre.
  • On a cruise: allow a wide margin for the last train and do the short version with three villages.

Luggage, shoes and where to sleep

Do not drag suitcases up village stairs: there are private left-luggage services in the villages, but look for them in advance. Wear comfortable shoes and bring water; closed shoes are required on Park trails. For more than a day, choose a base in the where to stay in Cinque Terre guide or look at the Cinque Terre map. More time? Itineraries for 2 days and 3 days.

Frequently asked questions

Is one day enough for Cinque Terre?

It is enough to see four villages by train: Monterosso, Vernazza, Manarola and Riomaggiore, about two hours in each. It is not enough for much walking, or for Corniglia.

Is it better to start in the north or the south?

North (Monterosso) if you come from Genoa or Levanto. South (Riomaggiore) if you come via La Spezia from Pisa, Florence or Rome, and if you want the Via dell’Amore, which is walked only from Riomaggiore to Manarola.

Is the Cinque Terre Train Card worth it?

With 5 rides, yes: €22 against €25 of tickets on the cheapest day type, €29.50 against €40 on the medium, €35 against €50 on the high. From 2 November it costs €17.30.

Do I have to book the Via dell’Amore?

Yes. Entry is limited and booking a time slot is compulsory, even after buying the card. You cannot enter without a card.

Can I hike between Vernazza and Monterosso?

No: the section has been closed since 10 September 2026 and there is no reopening date. Check the Park’s notices.
