When to go to La Spezia
You can visit the city all year round. For the sea and the boats to the Cinque Terre and Portovenere, the best months are June to September. To walk the trails and visit the villages without heat or crowds, choose April, May, June or September. In October the sea is still around 20 °C, but the rain returns: 10 rainy days in the month on average.
Weather alerts and bad weather: what changes
In Liguria, alerts for rain and thunderstorms are issued by ARPAL, with three levels: yellow, orange and red alerts. Check the level on the official Allerta Liguria website (in Italian) before setting off on a hike. During an alert, the Cinque Terre municipalities can close the trails by ordinance, and the Via dell’Amore between Riomaggiore and Manarola closes as soon as a yellow alert is issued. When the sea is rough, the boats in the gulf may not run: check at the pier on the morning itself.
