Where to stay in Finale Ligure

Finalmarina, Finalborgo, Finale Pia and Varigotti compared: where to stay for beaches, families, biking and climbing.

Finale Ligure is not one town but several: the municipality was created in 1927 by merging Finalmarina, Finalborgo and Finale Pia, and it also includes Varigotti. Where to stay depends on why you are coming. For a beach holiday without a car, the easiest base is Finalmarina, with the railway station and the beach in the centre. For atmosphere, or if you are here to ride or climb, choose Finalborgo, the walled village about 2 km inland. Finale Pia is smaller and calmer, and Varigotti is the prettiest spot on the sea, but has no station.

  • Beach without a car: Finalmarina, station and beach on foot
  • Atmosphere and outdoors: Finalborgo, at the foot of castles, trails and crags
  • Families: Finalmarina or Finale Pia, Blue Flag 2026 beaches
  • Prettiest seaside village: Varigotti, reached by bus from the station
  • Car: handy for the hinterland; A10 exit Finale Ligure, but the centres have restricted traffic zones (ZTL)

Finalmarina: the easiest base

Finalmarina and its beach from above

Finalmarina is the modern centre by the sea: a seafront promenade, a sand and fine-shingle beach with beach clubs and free stretches, the basilica of San Giovanni Battista and the Spanish Arch. Finale Ligure Marina station is on the Genoa–Ventimiglia line, and TPL Linea buses leave from here for Finalborgo, Finale Pia and Varigotti. If you arrive by train and want the beach, restaurants and an evening stroll all on foot, this is the place. Downside: in August it is the busiest area.

Finalborgo: atmosphere and trails

Rooftops and bell tower of Finalborgo among the mountains

Finalborgo is one of the Most Beautiful Villages of Italy: 15th-century walls, Porta Testa, the collegiate church of San Biagio and the Santa Caterina complex with the Archaeological Museum of the Finale. Above the village the Beretta road climbs to Castel San Giovanni and Castel Gavone. The sea is about 2 km away: 20–30 minutes on foot, or take the bus.

Staying here makes sense if you love evenings in the lanes and if you came for the outdoors: you are already on the road inland, towards Perti and the crags. The village is a restricted traffic zone, so ask your host where to leave the car. Find out more in our guide to Finalborgo’s castles.

Finale Pia: smaller and calmer

Finale Pia, east of Finalmarina, is easy to spot thanks to the 13th-century bell tower of the abbey of Santa Maria, still home to Olivetan Benedictine monks. The sand and shingle beach is smaller than Finalmarina’s, with beach clubs and free stretches, and holds the Blue Flag 2026. A good choice if you want the sea on your doorstep and a little less bustle in the evening, with buses to the station.

Varigotti: the seaside village

Varigotti beach and colourful houses

Varigotti is the most photographed corner of the Finale: colourful houses right on a long sandy beach, Blue Flag 2026, with the Baia dei Saraceni towards Noli. In summer, book early. Varigotti has no station: get off at Finale Ligure Marina and continue on a TPL Linea bus. The centre is a ZTL and parking is paid and expensive in high season. The Pilgrim’s Path to Noli starts here.

For mountain bikers and climbers

Finale is one of Europe’s outdoor capitals: more than 200 MTB trails from the mountains to the sea and over 4,000 climbing routes, on crags such as Rocca di Perti and Monte Cucco. On 16–18 October 2026 it hosts the UCI Enduro and E-Enduro World Championships, so rooms for those dates go fast.

  • Where: Finalborgo is closest to the inland trails; Finalmarina is handy for the station, services and evenings.
  • What: apartments and B&Bs are often more practical than a hotel for bikes, gear and early starts. Before booking, ask about a locked bike store and a place to wash bikes.
  • Trails: the Finale Outdoor Region consortium asks riders to contribute to trail maintenance with the For You Card.

Families and beaches

Sandy beach at Finale Ligure

Finale works well for a week at the beach with kids: Finalmarina, Finale Pia, Varigotti, Castelletto San Donato, the Spiaggia del Porto and Malpasso all hold the Blue Flag 2026. An apartment in Finalmarina or Finale Pia lets you walk to the beach and leave the car parked. With a dog: from 15 May to 15 September dogs are not allowed on the beaches, except at beach clubs that join the “Dog Welcome Beach” scheme. Beach by beach details are in our guide to Finale Ligure’s beaches.

Train, car and parking

  • By train: Finale Ligure Marina station is on the Genoa–Ventimiglia line; direct regional trains from Genova Brignole take about an hour. Then TPL Linea buses to Finalborgo, Finale Pia and Varigotti.
  • By car: A10 motorway, exit Finale Ligure. A car is useful for the hinterland and the crags, less so for the beach.
  • ZTL: Finalborgo, Finalmarina and Varigotti have restricted traffic zones, with cameras at Porta Testa, Porta Reale and via Gallesio. If your accommodation is inside one, ask how to get there.
  • Parking: few free spaces in the centres. Choose a place with parking.
  • Airports: Genoa is about 70 km away.

Staying nearby

If Finale is full, look at the neighbouring towns on the same railway or linked by bus. Noli, a former maritime republic beyond Capo Noli, can also be reached on foot from Varigotti along the Pilgrim’s Path. To the west, Pietra Ligure and Loano have Blue Flag beaches and plenty of family accommodation. For everything to see, read our Finale Ligure guide.
