Welcome to Borgio Verezzi

Borgio Verezzi

Borgio Verezzi is a municipality of about 2,100 people in the province of Savona, on the Riviera delle Palme, between Pietra Ligure to the west and Finale Ligure to the east. It is really two villages in one: Borgio, on the sea, with the railway station, the beach and the town hall, and Verezzi, a stone village on the hill at roughly 200–250 metres. They were merged into one municipality in 1933, the same year the caves were discovered.

Verezzi is one of the Borghi più belli d’Italia (Italy’s most beautiful villages) and hosts one of Liguria’s longest-running theatre festivals, founded in 1967, which is why the town is nicknamed «the town of theatre». Under the hill lies the karst system of the Borgio Verezzi Caves, also called the Valdemino caves, open to guided visits. Down below is the sea, with stretches of beach that were awarded the Blue Flag in 2026.

The combination works well: caves or beach in the morning, the lanes of Verezzi in the late afternoon with the light over the gulf. Half a day is enough for the village and the caves; allow one or two days if you add the beach. The caves have their own page: Borgio Verezzi Caves.

What to see

What to see in Borgio Verezzi

Borgio e Pietra Ligure viste dall'alto

Borgio Marina and the seafront

The coastal centre is small and takes a few minutes to walk. The station is called «Borgio Verezzi» but is in Borgio Marina, on via Aurelia, at sea level, with the sea a short walk away. Verezzi is on the hill and is not a comfortable walk from the station: you need the bus, a taxi or a steady climb. The municipal webcam (borgiolive.panomax.com) lets you check the sea before you leave.

La chiesa di San Pietro a Borgio

The parish church of San Pietro

In piazza San Pietro stands the parish church, built in 1789 on the remains of the old castle of the Burgum Albinganeum, designed by Giacomo Barella and finished between 1806 and 1808. It is neoclassical. The square is also one of the festival venues, with free evening shows.

Sanctuary of the Madonna del Buon Consiglio

According to the FAI, the sanctuary stands on the remains of a pagan temple. It was the old parish church outside the walls, earlier the abbey church of San Pietro and then of Santo Stefano. It became a sanctuary in 1945 and was declared «insigne» by John XXIII in 1960. It is a short stop for lovers of old churches; check opening times with the parish, as we could not confirm them.

The Genoese tower, the Torrione

Borgio keeps a tower built by the Genoese in the 16th century, known as the Torrione; today it is also a performance venue and hosted a festival evening in 2026. Sources disagree on the exact year, so we only say 16th century.

Il golfo visto dai pini del borgo di Verezzi

Piazza Sant'Agostino, the heart of Verezzi

This is the festival square and the most photographed spot in Verezzi. On one side is the small church of Sant’Agostino (sources give different centuries for its construction), on the other a terrace looking over the gulf. The houses around are in pale, pinkish stone, with vaults and covered passages. The main summer shows are held here; the rest of the year the square is simply quiet.

Un vicolo del borgo di Verezzi

The four hamlets of Verezzi

Verezzi is not one nucleus but four hamlets: Poggio, Piazza, Roccaro and Crosa. They are linked by paved lanes, steps, passages under the houses and short stretches through vegetable gardens and olive groves. Poggio has a defensive tower, Roccaro a chapel of the Immaculate Conception. The full round takes a couple of hours at a slow pace, mostly because you will stop for the view of the gulf every hundred metres. The surface is stone with many steps: a pushchair is hard work, so stick to the flatter stretches.

Un passaggio coperto nel borgo di Verezzi

A covered passage and corners among the gardens

Vaulted passages crossing the houses are typical of the village. Away from the square you find quieter corners with gardens and dry-stone walls, the best places to take photos without the crowd.

Un angolo di Verezzi tra gli orti

The «Phoenician» windmill

In the Crosa hamlet, at about 281 metres, stands a windmill with its sails inside the structure. It is called the «Mulino Fenicio», but the Phoenician origin is not backed by reliable sources: it is safer to call it a mill of ancient origin. For now it is a stop to see from outside; we have no visiting hours.

San Martino church and the Mothers' Bell

On top of the hill stands the parish church of San Martino Vescovo, built between 1637 and 1645. Next to it are the cemetery and the sanctuary of Maria Regina Mundi. Between the two churches is the Campana della Mamma (Mothers’ Bell), installed in 1982 in memory of mothers; local guides say it rings every evening, but the time is not confirmed by an official source.

Croce dei Santi

On the hill above Crosa, at about 285 metres, is a cross dating from 1664, planted by Capuchin pilgrims returning from the Holy Land. It looks over the sea and makes an easy short walk. Sources give its exact position differently: follow the local signs.

Borgio Verezzi Caves

The caves can only be visited with a guide: the route is about 800 metres through large chambers and blocks fallen from the ceiling, and the visit lasts about 40 minutes. They were discovered in 1933 and opened to the public in 1970. The address is via Battorezza 5. Prices, times and practical tips are in Borgio Verezzi Caves. They are not the Toirano Caves: for those go to Toirano.

Sea

Beaches of Borgio Verezzi

Il mare di Borgio visto da Verezzi

The sea is at Borgio, not Verezzi. In 2026 the Blue Flag went to Borgio Verezzi for the stretches Ex Sati, Rio Batorezza and Rio Bottasano (FEE list). Trade guides describe beaches of sand mixed with fine gravel and a gently shelving seabed, with bathing establishments and free stretches, including a free beach with an accessible walkway listed by the municipal tourist portal. Towards Finale there are small pebble coves reached on foot.

We could not confirm which stretches are free and which are equipped, nor sunbed prices: ask the establishment or check the municipal portal. If the beach is packed in August, alternatives are a few minutes away by train or car: Pietra Ligure and Finale Ligure.

Where to stay

Where to stay in Borgio Verezzi

The choice is between the two areas. Borgio Marina suits train travellers: station, beach and shops are close, but via Aurelia and the railway run nearby and we have not checked the noise. Verezzi is for quiet and views over the gulf: B&Bs and houses in Roccaro and Piazza, with lanes, steps and climbs. Without a car, plan around bus 84 or taxis.

The municipal portal lists hotels, B&Bs, rooms for rent, a campsite and other accommodation. For more choice and a wider price range also look at Finale Ligure, Pietra Ligure and Loano, a few minutes away. There are no nightclubs in Borgio: nightlife is in Pietra and Finale.

Getting there

How to get to Borgio Verezzi

By car

Borgio Verezzi has no motorway exit. Take the A10 (Autostrada dei Fiori) and leave at Pietra Ligure or Finale Ligure, then continue on the Aurelia (SS1), which runs through Borgio. It is about 2.5 km from Pietra and 3.2–3.5 km from Finale.

By train

Borgio Verezzi station is in Borgio Marina, on the Genoa–Ventimiglia line, with Trenitalia regional trains. From Genoa allow about an hour and twenty to an hour and a half. Direct trains are few: check the official timetable, or get off at Pietra Ligure or Finale Ligure Marina and continue by a short train or bus ride.

By bus

The operator is TPL Linea. Line 84 links Pietra Ligure, Borgio, Verezzi and Ca’ del Moro; temporary diversions have been reported, so check times on tpllinea.it. On festival show days there is a paid shuttle from piazza Gramsci to piazza Sant’Agostino.

By air

The most convenient airport is Genoa Cristoforo Colombo: the Volabus runs to Genova Brignole, then a regional train. Nice and Pisa are further away.

Parking

Parking is normally paid from 1 April to 30 September, every day from 8:00 to 20:00. In 2026 payment started on 1 July. In summer 2026 the sports field in via Valle, with about 80 spaces, was listed as temporary free parking. New blue zones exist because of the underpass works. Hourly rates and parking at Verezzi are not confirmed: read the municipality’s notice. ⚠️ Also check the municipality’s notices on water before you travel.

The guide

The Borgio Verezzi Theatre Festival

The festival began in 1967 and was run directly by the municipality for sixty years. Its historic home is piazza Sant’Agostino in Verezzi; in 2026, its 60th edition, shows also used the Torrione, piazza San Pietro (free admission), the Gassman theatre and the caves, which hosted a sound installation. The 2026 edition ran from 8 July to 13 August, with shows at 21:30, and is over. According to the Chamber of Commerce it drew about 8,200 spectators.

How it works in practice: in 2026 tickets in piazza Sant’Agostino cost 26–32 euros, the Gassman theatre 18–20 euros, the Torrione 15 euros. A shuttle ran from piazza Gramsci to piazza Sant’Agostino for 1 euro, with returns after the show. The box office is at viale Colombo 47 (tel. 019 610167). Dates and programme for 2027 have not been announced: the festival usually runs from July to August. Check the festival website before booking.

Walks and hikes

Le vigne sopra Borgio Verezzi

The four hamlets of Verezzi are linked by marked trails: the Sentiero Natura (waymark «SN»), the Sentiero Cultura and the geological trail. Guides describe an undemanding panoramic loop from Borgio to upper Verezzi. Lengths, times and ascents are not confirmed by official sources: wear walking shoes, as the surface is stony or paved, and note that waymarking is good in the hamlets but less clear in the woods. The municipal portal points to the dedicated trails site, borgioverezzisentieri.altervista.org.

The municipality announced free guided walks on 10, 18 and 24 October 2026. See the tourist portal for details.

Just over the border in Finale Ligure is the Caprazoppa, a climbing crag on compact limestone, with the Cento Corde crag (23 routes, 4a–6b). At its foot opens the Arene Candide cave, which is in Finale Ligure, not Borgio: visits are guided and booking is compulsory with the Finale museum (tel. 019 690020); the meeting point has been Borgio Verezzi station, followed by a 30–40 minute walk. The 2026 calendar is not confirmed.

What to eat in Borgio Verezzi

The signature dish of Verezzi is lumache alla verezzina (snails), a dish with municipal designation (De.Co.), traditionally served around 22 July, Saint Mary Magdalene’s day. The Verezzi onion also has De.Co. status. In August the Sagra della Lumaca is held: according to the 2026 programme it was the 60th edition, on 13 and 14 August, but we only found it on secondary sources. Local wines include Lumassina and Nostralino Veretium; olive oil and capers are local products. For restaurants see the list on the municipal portal.
