Pigna's climate month by month

Pigna is a medieval village with houses cascading down the hillside, crossed by the Nervia stream and at the gateway to the Alpi Liguri Regional Nature Park. There are no official averages for the village: the table starts from the Sanremo figures and takes off about 2 °C for the altitude. The “chibi”, the narrow and often shady alleys, stay cool in summer. For the weather on the coast, see the Ventimiglia weather page.

Monthly averages for Sanremo (air temperatures 2004–2020). Source: climieviaggi.it. For Pigna, at about 280 m above sea level, the temperatures are an estimate: they are the Sanremo figures, on the coast about 20 km away, with 0.6 °C less for every 100 m of altitude; the rainy days are those of Sanremo. Treat them as a guide: in the valleys nights are usually cooler and the gap between day and night wider.

Hikes and countryside

The climb to Monte Toraggio starts from Pigna: about four and a half hours up and three and a half down, on well-marked trails. It’s a long hike, to be done only with a settled forecast and an early start. Buggio, the hamlet at 482 m, is another starting point for walks in the Park. From mid-September to mid-October the Pigna beans, a Slow Food Presidium, are harvested. The Lago Pigo spa has been closed since 2016.

If it rains in Pigna

The parish church of San Michele, at the top of the village, holds Giovanni Canavesio’s polyptych from 1500, with 36 panels; the church of San Bernardo has a cycle of frescoes by the same painter. The museum “La Terra e la Memoria”, in piazza XX Settembre, tells the story of rural life in the valley: visits are by appointment, so ask the town hall. Further down the valley are Apricale and Rocchetta Nervina.

When to go to Pigna

The best months are spring and autumn; in summer the valley is good for trails and cooler air. The feast of San Filippo is traditionally celebrated on 28 May. In Liguria, alerts for rain and thunderstorms are issued by ARPAL: check them on the official Allerta Liguria website (in Italian) before driving into the Nervia valley or setting off on a hike.
