Sea, storm swells and surfing

In summer the sea at Varazze is often calm: the beaches of Varazze are described one by one in the dedicated guide. With the storm swells, however, Varazze becomes one of the best-known surf spots in Europe: the main break, La Secca, is a reef over a rocky seabed near the pier, not suitable for beginners. In strong storm swells the waves can reach about 5 metres. The wave season usually starts in November: in the table for the coming days, look at the strength and direction of the wind.

When to go to Varazze

For the sea, go from June to September; July and August are the busiest months. To walk the Passeggiata Europa and climb to the Santuario della Guardia on Monte Grosso, choose spring or autumn. In April there’s the Festa di Santa Caterina.
