Via dell'Amore, trails and boats

The Via dell’Amore between Riomaggiore and Manarola closes whenever there’s a weather alert, even a yellow one: if the sky looks uncertain, check before booking. The Manarola–Corniglia stretch of the Sentiero Azzurro (Blue Trail) is closed because of landslides; to reach Corniglia you go via Volastra, among vineyards and dry-stone walls, but in the rain the steps become slippery. When the sea is rough the boats may be suspended.

In Liguria, alerts for rain and thunderstorms are issued by ARPAL, with three levels: yellow, orange and red alerts. Check the level on the official Allerta Liguria website (in Italian). During an alert, the Cinque Terre municipalities can close the trails by ordinance, and the Via dell’Amore between Riomaggiore and Manarola closes even with a yellow alert. When to go to Manarola

Manarola is crowded from May to September. For the sea, choose June or September; for the trails, April, May and October. In December and over the holidays the illuminated nativity scene lights up on the hillside: the best view is from the Via Beccara, an unlit path for which you need a torch, and in wind and rain it’s better to stay in the village.
