Genoa's climate month by month
Genoa has mild winters for northern Italy and hot but breezy summers. Autumn is the season of the heaviest rain: September and October have few rainy days but a lot of water, often in short, intense thunderstorms. In winter, north-easterly winds come down from the Apennines and bring cold air from the Po Valley: on those days it feels colder than the thermometer says. July is the sunniest month, with about nine and a half hours of sun a day.

When to go to Genoa
You can visit Genoa all year round, because its main sights are indoors or a short walk from the centre. To wander the caruggi (the narrow alleys of the old town) and climb to the viewpoints, the best months are April to June and September–October. For the sea, at Boccadasse, at Nervi or in the villages of the Golfo Paradiso, go from June to September.
If it rains in Genoa
When it rains, Genoa has plenty to offer: the Aquarium and the Galata Maritime Museum at the Porto Antico, the Palazzi dei Rolli on Via Garibaldi and the Cathedral of San Lorenzo. What and where to eat on an indoor day is in the guide to what to eat in Genoa.
Weather alerts in Genoa
In Liguria, alerts for rain and thunderstorms are issued by ARPAL, with three levels: yellow, orange and red alerts. In autumn, rain in Genoa can be very intense within a few hours: check the level on the official Allerta Liguria website (in Italian) and follow the instructions of the city council. Boats to Camogli, San Fruttuoso and Portofino run according to the timetable and the weather: when the sea is rough they may be suspended.
