Monterosso's climate month by month

Monterosso is the westernmost village of the Cinque Terre and has the largest beaches. Winters are mild and summers hot and humid; rain falls mostly between October and January, while July and August are the driest months. For Monterosso, the table uses La Spezia’s averages.

When to go to Monterosso

For the sea, go from June to September: in August the water reaches 25 °C on average. July and August are also the busiest months, though, on the beach and on the train. To walk the trails and see the villages with fewer crowds, the best months are May, June and September; April and October are cooler and a little less predictable. Bad weather, trails and sea

With the libeccio, the south-west wind that brings storm surges to this coast, the sea also rises on Monterosso’s beaches: on those days swimming is not advised and beach clubs may fly the red flag. Monterosso’s beaches are described one by one in the dedicated guide.

In Liguria, alerts for rain and thunderstorms are issued by ARPAL, with three levels: yellow, orange and red alerts. Check the level on the official Allerta Liguria website (in Italian). During an orange or red alert the town council can ban access to the trails by ordinance, and it has already done so. The Via dell’Amore between Riomaggiore and Manarola closes even with a yellow alert. On 10 September 2026 the Park closed the Sentiero Azzurro between Monterosso, Vernazza and Corniglia for geological checks, with no reopening date. The status of the paths is on the Cinque Terre National Park website. When the sea is rough, boats may be suspended: check at the pier on the morning itself.
