On the west side is the long, sandy Bay of Fables (Baia delle Favole); on the east the small Bay of Silence (Baia del Silenzio), where pastel houses come right down to the beach. It lies on the Gulf of Tigullio, on the Riviera di Levante, roughly halfway between Genoa and La Spezia.

The Romans knew it as Segesta Tigulliorum, and from the 12th century it belonged to Genoa, which built a castle on the upper part of the headland that locals simply call “the island”. In 1833 a young Hans Christian Andersen stayed here, and the town has adopted him: the Andersen Prize for children’s literature dates from 1967 and every June there is an Andersen Festival.

With about 17,000 residents, Sestri Levante works both as a beach destination and as a practical base for day trips. The station is on the Genoa–La Spezia line, boats run to Portofino and the Cinque Terre, and in 2026 the Cinque Terre Express started running directly from here. You can see the old town on foot in half a day; allow two or three days if you also want the beaches and the Punta Manara walk.

What to see in Sestri Levante

Almost everything worth seeing is between the two bays and on the headland. On Monte Castello, the highest point, are the ruins of a 12th-century Genoese castle. The path down to the Ciappa du Lu cove is steep: only take it in proper footwear. Fit walkers can continue past Punta Baffe to Moneglia, a full-day hike, and come back by train.

What to eat in Sestri Levante

The food is classic Tigullio: focaccia, vegetable pies, pesto, anchovies and other oily fish. The signature dish is bagnun from Riva Trigoso, an anchovy soup with tomato, garlic, olive oil and ship’s biscuits, first cooked aboard the leudi, Liguria’s traditional cargo boats. Try it at the Sagra del Bagnun in July, when volunteers hand out thousands of free portions. Anchovies are also the stars of the Anchovy Festival in June.

Events in Sestri Levante

Andersen Festival (early June): theatre, circus, dance and family events all over town, free of charge. The old town and the Bay of Silence are the most atmospheric and the most expensive: ideal for couples who want to walk out in the evening, less so if you have a car, because of the ZTL. The Bay of Fables and seafront area is the most practical for families, with the beach in front, services and parking nearby. Near the station prices are lower and it is handy if you plan train day trips to the Cinque Terre and Portofino.

Riva Trigoso is a quieter, often cheaper alternative with its own beach and station. For July, August and the Andersen Festival, book well ahead.

How to get to Sestri Levante

By car

Take the A12 Genoa–Livorno motorway and exit at Sestri Levante: the toll booth is about 1 km from the centre. The old town is a limited traffic zone (ZTL): set your satnav to a car park, not to your accommodation, and ask your host whether they have parking or a permit.

By train

Sestri Levante station is on the Genoa–La Spezia line, within walking distance of the bays. From Genova Brignole it takes 45 minutes to about 1 hour 20, depending on the train; from La Spezia Centrale 30–40 minutes on direct regional trains. From 14 March to 1 November 2026 some Cinque Terre Express trains were extended to Sestri Levante: check times on the Trenitalia website.

By boat

The Servizio Marittimo del Tigullio links Sestri Levante with Portofino and San Fruttuoso, with more departures at weekends and in high season, and with the Cinque Terre from May to September. Boats can be cancelled in rough seas: check the timetable at traghettiportofino.it.

By plane

The nearest airport is Genoa Cristoforo Colombo, about 60 km away: continue by car on the motorway or by train from Genoa. Pisa, about 110 km away, is the main alternative.

Parking

Almost all parking is paid. Blue-line spaces usually cost €1.50–2 per hour and are paid until the evening, later in summer; pay at the meter or by app. The closest car parks to the centre are Piazza Aldo Moro, on the edge of the ZTL, and the underground Sant’Anna car park at the end of the Bay of Fables. Further out, near the railway, the free Baden Powell car park is linked to the centre by shuttle. In August, arrive early in the morning.

Frequently asked questions about Sestri Levante

Why is Sestri Levante called the town of two seas?

Because the old town sits on an isthmus facing two different bays: the Bay of Fables to the west and the Bay of Silence to the east.

Do you need to book the Bay of Silence?

No. In July and August access is capped (450 people in 2026) from 8.30am to 5.30pm, but entry is free with no booking: if the beach is full you wait for someone to leave.

Which beach is best for children?

The Bay of Fables: wide, sandy and gently shelving, with both beach clubs and free stretches.

What can you see in Sestri Levante in one day?

The two bays, the headland walk with San Nicolò and the former Annunziata convent, Via XXV Aprile, Piazza Matteotti and Palazzo Fascie with the MuSel. If you still have energy, walk up to Punta Manara.

How long is the Punta Manara walk?

The loop from the centre is 7–8 km: about 2.5 hours of walking with 250 m of ascent, on an easy hiking trail.

Where can you park in Sestri Levante?

At Piazza Aldo Moro or the underground Sant’Anna car park near the centre, or at the free Baden Powell car park with a shuttle. The old town is a ZTL.

How do you get from Sestri Levante to the Cinque Terre?

By train: in 2026 the Cinque Terre Express also started from Sestri Levante; otherwise change at Levanto. Boats also run from May to September.

Can you visit Portofino from Sestri Levante without a car?

Yes, by boat from Sestri’s harbour or by train to Santa Margherita Ligure and then by bus.

When is the best time to visit Sestri Levante?

June and September are best for swimming without the August crowds. Spring and autumn are ideal for walking and sightseeing.

What is bagnun?

An anchovy soup with tomato, garlic, olive oil and ship’s biscuits, typical of Riva Trigoso and celebrated with a festival in July.

The town of two seas: Bay of Silence and Bay of Fables, the headland with San Nicolò, old
