It is the only one with a real natural harbour: a square that opens straight onto the sea, fishing boats pulled up on the slipway, the church with its octagonal bell tower on one side and the tower of Castello Doria on the other. It is also one of the most photographed villages in Italy, and it shows: on a summer afternoon the main street is packed.

The municipality has around 670 residents and also includes Corniglia, Prevo, Drignana, Muro and San Bernardino. It first appears in records in 1080 as “castrum Vernatio”, a naval base of the Obertenghi family, and from the 13th century it belonged to Genoa. The name is linked to vernaccia, a wine already mentioned by Boccaccio. Today Vernazza is listed among the Most Beautiful Villages in Italy and, together with the rest of the Cinque Terre and Portovenere, has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1997.

You can see the village on foot in half a day, but it is far better if you stay the night: early in the morning and in the evening, once the day-trippers have left on the train, the harbour square belongs to the fishermen again. Come by train, not by car: the roads are narrow, the centre is for residents only and the car parks are well outside the village. All the options are explained in our guide on getting to Vernazza and where to park.

What to see in Vernazza

Vernazza is small: one main street running down from the station to the sea, one square, one headland with the castle and another with the church. Everything else is steps and narrow alleys. Three to four hours is enough to see it all at a relaxed pace, including the climb to the castle. Add the walk to the Reggio sanctuary and you need half a day.

The harbour and Piazza Marconi

The heart of the village is the harbour square, where Via Roma ends at the water. Tall, colourful houses form an amphitheatre around it, wooden boats rest on the ramp and café tables reach almost to the sea. This is where everyone takes the same photo, and for good reason: from here you see the castle, the bell tower and the breakwater in one frame.

The harbour is protected by a breakwater where the ferries dock. Walk out to the end and look back: the whole village is in front of you, and in summer people jump into the sea from the rocks. Around lunchtime and in the early afternoon the square is crowded; come back after six, when the light softens on the façades.

Via Roma and the alleys

Via Roma is the only real street in Vernazza. On both sides, narrow staircases and covered passages climb up to the higher houses. Pick one at random: within two minutes you have left the crowds behind and are among washing lines and tiny vegetable plots.

Church of Santa Margherita d’Antiochia

The parish church stands right on the sea at the end of the harbour, its apse almost touching the rocks. It is first mentioned in a deed of 1318, though it is probably older. Inside, the three naves have dark stone columns from the Mesco quarries and a Gothic tabernacle from the 15th century. The octagonal bell tower, about 40 metres high, is the village’s landmark together with the castle tower.

Saint Margaret is Vernazza’s patron saint. Her feast day is 20 July, with a procession, stalls along Via Roma and fireworks over the sea in the evening. Go in quietly: this is a working church, not just a monument.

Castello Doria

On the headland west of the harbour, more than 70 metres above the sea, stands the fortress that once defended the village against pirates. It is documented from the 13th century, but probably stands on an earlier Obertenghi stronghold. The oldest part is the round central tower, restored in the 20th century; at the end of the Second World War German troops used it as an anti-aircraft post.

You reach it by a steep flight of steps from the square. Entry is by ticket and takes you up to a terrace with a view down on the harbour, the church and the coast as far as Monterosso. Opening hours change with the season, so check at the entrance. The light is at its best at sunset.

Belforte tower

Below the castle, at the mouth of the harbour, stands a square bastion from the Genoese period. It was part of the lookout and defence system along with the castle and the other towers of the village; another watchtower stands near the start of the trail to Corniglia. You get the best view of it from the breakwater, with the waves breaking at its base.

Church and convent of San Francesco

Higher up on the eastern side of the village is the complex built in the mid-17th century for the Franciscan friars. The church is deconsecrated and now hosts exhibitions and performances; the convent houses the town hall. On the way up you get a good view over the rooftops towards the castle on the other side of the village.

Sanctuary of Nostra Signora di Reggio

Just over 300 metres up, in the woods above the village, is the sanctuary that locals hold most dear. The first written record dates from 1248, but the crypt contains remains older than the year 1000. Inside, a painting of the Black Madonna and Child is venerated. In front of the church is a square shaded by centuries-old trees, including an ancient cypress, with a water point.

Walk up on trail 508: it starts near the station, follows the Stations of the Cross and is a paved mule track of about 2 km, uphill all the way. It is the best walk when the coastal trails are closed: there is shade up there and it is peaceful even in August.

San Bernardino

On the road that comes in from the hills, above Corniglia, the hamlet of San Bernardino has the sanctuary of Nostra Signora delle Grazie, rebuilt in the 19th century on a medieval chapel. Its feast day is 8 September. It is worth a stop if you arrive by car or walk the higher trails, with a wide view over the coast.

The 2011 flood and the recovery

On 25 October 2011 a storm dumped more than 500 millimetres of rain on the valley in a few hours. The stream running under Via Roma burst out: the village was buried under about four metres of mud and debris, the station was flooded, the railway cut and three people died.

The village was rebuilt by its residents, volunteers and associations set up after the disaster, such as Save Vernazza, which funded restorations, trail repairs and dry-stone walls. Walking down Via Roma today you see no trace of it, which is one more reason to respect local rules, starting with the trails.

Beaches in Vernazza

Vernazza is not a beach-day destination. There are two small beaches, no beach clubs and plenty of people. The first is inside the harbour, in front of the church: sand mixed with fine pebbles and calm water, good for a quick swim with children. The second is reached from Via Roma, just before the square, through a natural opening in the rock: it is a little larger, with pebbles and sand and rocks on either side, and stays in the shade during the hottest hours.

If you prefer deep water, swim from the rocks below the castle or near the breakwater, keeping an eye on the ferries. For sunbeds and umbrellas, go to Monterosso, just a few minutes away by train.

Walks and hikes

Vernazza sits halfway along the Blue Trail (Sentiero Azzurro), the coastal path linking the five villages. Towards Monterosso, section 592-4 is about 3.7 km long, with 217 metres of elevation gain and roughly two hours of walking: it climbs above the church, crosses the olive groves of Costa Mesorano and passes the cliffs of Punta Corone. Towards Corniglia, section 592-3 is about 4.1 km long, with 269 metres of elevation gain and an hour and a half of walking, passing the hamlet of Prevo. Both are rated for experienced hikers: steps, narrow sections and little shade.

Important: since 10 September 2026 the National Park has closed the Corniglia–Vernazza–Monterosso section pending geological checks, with no reopening date. As of early October 2026 it had not reopened. Before you set out, check the notices on the Cinque Terre National Park website. When it is open, you need a Cinque Terre Card to walk it; in some seasons the Monterosso section has been one-way at peak hours.

If the coastal trail is closed, head inland. Trail 508 leads to the Reggio sanctuary and on to Foce Drignana; trail 581 links Reggio with the sanctuary of San Bernardino through woods and vineyards, with views along the whole coast. These trails are quieter but still mountain paths: wear hiking shoes, carry water and check their status before you go.

Vernazza at sunset

The classic postcard view of Vernazza, the harbour with the castle and the row of houses, is taken from the trail to Monterosso, a few minutes above the village. A bottle of Sciacchetrà makes a good souvenir; buy it in the village wine shops or directly from the growers.

Otherwise, the food is classic Cinque Terre: fresh or salted anchovies, focaccia, trofie with pesto, fried seafood and lemons from the terraces. Eat on the square for the atmosphere, but for better food and prices look for places higher up, away from the harbour.

Day trips from Vernazza

Monterosso al Mare: the widest beaches in the Cinque Terre and a charming old town, a few minutes by train.

Corniglia: the only village perched on a hill, above the Lardarina staircase, five minutes by train.

Manarola: colourful houses on the rock and the vineyard trail above the village.

Riomaggiore: the southernmost village and the Via dell’Amore to Manarola, booking required.

Levanto: a long beach, a lively centre and a practical base with more places to stay.

Portovenere: the church of San Pietro on the rocks and the islands, by ferry in the warm months.

La Spezia: the gateway city to the Cinque Terre, with the Naval Museum and a good market.

Where to stay in Vernazza

There are no large hotels in Vernazza. Accommodation means rooms, apartments and small B&Bs in the old houses, often with no lift and plenty of stairs. Book early: from May to September there are few beds for the demand.

By the harbour and the square is the choice if you want to enjoy the village in the evening and wake up with the sea under your window. Be aware that it is noisy until late and you will be carrying your luggage up steps. Along Via Roma and near the station is more practical if you are taking the train every day. In the upper houses you get more quiet and better views, but every return is a climb.

If you are travelling by car, or want more choice and lower prices, stay in Levanto or La Spezia and visit Vernazza by train.

How to get to Vernazza

By car

Leave the A12 motorway at Carrodano–Levanto, head towards Levanto and follow signs for Monterosso; before the road drops to the sea, turn left uphill towards Vernazza. The road passes near the Soviore sanctuary and joins the provincial road down to Vernazza: about 30 km and an hour’s drive. Alternatively, exit at Brugnato and climb towards Pignone and the Cinque Terre road. The last few kilometres after San Bernardino are narrow and steep.

By train

The station is in the village, a few minutes’ walk from the harbour, on the Genoa–La Spezia line. Regional trains between Levanto and La Spezia stop at every village: Monterosso and Corniglia are about five minutes away, La Spezia under twenty. From 14 March to 1 November 2026 the special Cinque Terre fare applies: 5, 8 or 10 euros per journey depending on the day’s band, to be validated before boarding and valid for 75 minutes. The alternative is the Cinque Terre Train Card, with unlimited trains and access to the paid trails. From either, continue by train: change at La Spezia if you arrive from Pisa, or follow the coast line from Genoa, sometimes with a change at Levanto.

Parking

You cannot drive into the village: the centre is for residents only. Along the provincial road, about 1.5 km from the village, there are two private paid car parks with limited spaces and a shuttle into Vernazza.
