Its colourful tower houses stack up along a narrow valley down to a tiny harbour, where fishing boats are pulled up onto the street. About 1,250 people live here, and the municipality also includes Manarola, Groppo and Volastra.

The main street was built over the stream that gave the village its name, the Rivus Maior. Riomaggiore first appears in records in 1251; a few years later the Turcotti family built the castle, and in 1276 the land passed to Genoa. In the 19th century the railway cut the village in two, which is why you still reach the harbour through stairs and passages under the tracks. The painter Telemaco Signorini kept coming back for almost forty years and painted it again and again.

Come for the harbour at sunset, the trails that climb straight into the vineyards, and the logistics: the station is in the village and La Spezia is about ten minutes away by train, which makes Riomaggiore one of the easiest bases for the Cinque Terre. The downside: from April to October the lanes are packed, the beach is small and driving is hard work. Arrive by train and, if you can, stay the night: in the evening the day-trippers leave and the village is calm again.

What to see in Riomaggiore

You can see the village on foot in half a day, but everything is uphill. The harbour is a small inlet closed in by tall, narrow houses, with a slipway where the boats are hauled out. Under the oldest houses runs an arcaded loggia that supports the original core of the village.

The best time is sunset, when the light hits the façades. For the classic photo, walk up to the left along Via San Giacomo, one of the spots where Signorini set up his easel. In 1870 the church was lengthened and given a neo-Gothic façade, but the original rose window was put back in place. Check the right-hand side: it keeps two Gothic doorways carved with animals and human figures.

Inside, under pointed arches, there is a wooden crucifix attributed to Anton Maria Maragliano, a Preaching of the Baptist attributed to Domenico Fiasella and a marble pulpit. The Oratory of the Disciplinati, also called dell’Assunta, holds a 15th-century triptych of the Madonna and Child with Saints John and Dominic and a wooden statue known as the Madonna of the Chains, linked to the pirate raids. He returned from 1881, once the railway arrived, and between 1892 and 1899 spent almost every summer here. He painted the stream before it was covered, the Marina slipway, the rooftops, the women in the street and the view from Montenero. In 2019 two portraits of local children by him were rediscovered in the Town Hall.

Beaches in Riomaggiore

Riomaggiore is not a beach destination. The main stretch is Fossola beach, east of the harbour: from the Marina turn left towards the ferry landing and follow the path along the cliff. It’s made of large stones and pebbles, with no beach clubs and no lifeguard, just a small shower. In rough seas getting in and out of the water is dangerous. Strong swimmers can reach the Grotta del Pescecane and the Lama Crexia rocks in about ten minutes, swimming towards Portovenere.

Note: storms in November 2023 shrank the beach a lot, and in August 2025 the council closed access for replenishment works. Space is tight and access may be closed at times: check the notices on the Comune di Riomaggiore website before you go. Many people simply swim from the flat rocks near the harbour pier instead.

Canneto beach, between Punta Castagna and Punta del Cavo, is the wildest, with a freshwater waterfall running down the hillside. The old path is dangerous, so you can only get there by boat, on a tour from the harbour or in a rented dinghy. For a proper, easy beach day, take the train to Monterosso.

Things to do in Riomaggiore

Diving and snorkelling in the Marine Protected Area

The sea off Riomaggiore is part of the Cinque Terre Marine Protected Area, set up in 1997. Expect plenty of steps: always ask how many before booking.

Hillside and coast road: a few places with parking and open sea views, handy if you’re driving, but a long walk from the centre.

From May to September book months ahead and check the distance from the station carefully. On a tight budget, staying in La Spezia and using the train is a sensible alternative.

How to get to Riomaggiore

By car

Leave the A12 or A15 motorway at La Spezia–Santo Stefano di Magra and cross La Spezia following signs for the Cinque Terre: near the stadium, take Via delle Cinque Terre uphill and, past Biassa, join the coast road. It’s about 12 km of climbs and tunnels, with the last 2 km dropping down to the village. Allow half an hour from La Spezia. The village centre is closed to visitors’ cars.

By train

Riomaggiore station is on the Genoa–La Spezia line and linked to the village by a pedestrian tunnel. Regional trains between Levanto and La Spezia are frequent: La Spezia is about ten minutes away, Manarola three, Monterosso a quarter of an hour. Direct trains from Genova Brignole take just under two hours. From Pisa, change at La Spezia Centrale.

From 14 March to 1 November 2026 a special Cinque Terre fare applies on regional trains: €5, €8 or €10 per journey depending on the day’s demand band, valid for 75 minutes after validation; after 7.30 pm the lowest fare applies. The Cinque Terre Train Card includes unlimited regional trains, the paid trails and the Park buses. Details on Trenitalia, Cinque Terre by train and card.parconazionale5terre.it.

By boat

In the warm months, when the sea is calm, the boats of the Consorzio Marittimo Turistico 5 Terre Golfo dei Poeti stop at Riomaggiore, at the landing next to the beach. They link La Spezia, Portovenere and Lerici with Manarola, Vernazza and Monterosso; Corniglia has no landing. Timetables and fares on navigazionegolfodeipoeti.it.

By plane

The nearest airport is Pisa, about 90 km away; Genoa is about 120 km. From either, take the train to La Spezia and then the Cinque Terre regional train.

Parking

The public car park is a small multi-storey at the end of the road down to the village, just after the roundabout. This is the Rio Park, with about 60 spaces; it is paid and fills up by mid-morning in summer and at weekends. A few more spaces line the road down and the coast road, some with a parking disc: from there, walk down or take the Park shuttle. For a day trip the advice is simple: leave the car in La Spezia and take the train.

Frequently asked questions about Riomaggiore

What can I see in Riomaggiore in one day?

The Marina and harbour, Via Colombo, the church of San Giovanni Battista, the castle viewpoint and, if your legs allow, the climb to the Montenero sanctuary. At sunset go back to the harbour or Via San Giacomo.

Does Riomaggiore have a beach?

Yes, Fossola beach: small, made of large stones, a few minutes’ walk from the Marina, with no facilities. After recent storms space is limited and access can be closed for works.

Is the Via dell’Amore open?

Yes, it reopened in 2024, but you can only walk it with a Cinque Terre Card and a booked time slot on the Park website.

How long is the walk up to the Montenero sanctuary?

About an hour from the Marina on trail 593V, a long stairway with 300 metres of climbing. Coming down takes 30 minutes.

Can I drive to Riomaggiore?

Yes, from La Spezia via Biassa, but the centre is closed to traffic and the Rio Park has only about 60 spaces. The train is almost always the better choice.

Do I need the Cinque Terre Card to visit Riomaggiore?

No. You don’t need it for the village, the castle or the Montenero trail. You need it for the Via dell’Amore, and it pays off if you take several train rides in one day.

Is it better to stay in Riomaggiore or Manarola?

Riomaggiore has more choice, the handier station and a slightly livelier evening; Manarola is smaller and quieter. They’re three minutes apart by train, so choose on price and on the number of steps.

When is the best time to visit Riomaggiore?

May, June, September and early October: good walking weather and fewer crowds than in July and August. For swimming, June to September is best.

The first Cinque Terre village from La Spezia: harbour, Via Colombo, castle, Montenero, Fossola beach,
