It stands at the mouth of the river Roia, at the far western end of Liguria, in the province of Imperia. It has around 23,000 inhabitants and two quite distinct sides. Down below is the modern town, with the seafront, the railway station and the big Friday market that draws people from all over the Côte d’Azur. On the hill across the river is Ventimiglia Alta, the medieval old town enclosed by its walls.

History here goes back a very long way. In the Balzi Rossi caves, right on the border, remains of Palaeolithic people have been found; on the Nervia plain stood Albintimilium, the Roman town whose theatre and baths still survive. The name Ventimiglia actually comes from Albintimilium, “chief town of the Intemelii”, the Ligurian people who lived in the area: the story about it being “twenty miles” from the border is only a legend.

It is worth coming for the Hanbury Gardens, one of the most famous botanical gardens in Europe, for an old town that sees few tourists, for the sandy beach at Le Calandre and for its location: Menton is a quarter of an hour away, Monaco about half an hour and Nice less than an hour by train.

What to see in Ventimiglia

The sights fall into three areas: the old town on the hill, the lower town with the Nervia archaeological area, and the coast towards the border, with the Hanbury Gardens and the Balzi Rossi. To see everything at a relaxed pace you need two days.

Ventimiglia Alta

The medieval town grew up from the 8th century onwards, when the inhabitants left the Roman town on the plain and moved to the hill across the Roia, which was easier to defend. It remained the heart of town life until the 19th century, when the arrival of the railway shifted development down the hill. Today it is one of the oldest historic centres in Liguria, still lived in and largely untouched by tourism.

You walk up from the river along narrow lanes, stepped streets and covered passageways. The main street is via Garibaldi, lined with noble palazzi with stone doorways, oratories such as the Oratorio dei Neri, and the 16th-century Casa Biancheri. The old town is also home to the Murru de Bö, a small photography museum. From the highest points you can see the coast all the way to France.

Cattedrale di Santa Maria Assunta and Baptistery

The Romanesque cathedral of the Assunta, built between the 11th and 12th centuries, is the main monument of Ventimiglia Alta. Options include mid-range hotels, B&Bs, guesthouses and apartments, plus a few agriturismi in the hills.

If you are getting around by train, the area between the station and the seafront is the most convenient. For a quieter stay with a view, choose Ventimiglia Alta or the Calandre area; for the sea and the gardens, the hamlets towards the border such as La Mortola. In high season and during the Agosto Medievale it is worth booking well ahead.

How to get to Ventimiglia and where to park

By car

Ventimiglia is the last exit on the A10 Genoa–Ventimiglia motorway; beyond the border the motorway continues into France as the A8 towards Nice. From Genoa it takes about two and a half hours. For the coast towards the border, the Hanbury Gardens and the Balzi Rossi, follow the Aurelia main road towards France.

By train

Ventimiglia station is where the Italian and French railways meet. From Genova Brignole there are around ten direct trains a day, taking about two and a half hours; from Milano Centrale there are seven direct trains, almost all Intercity, taking about four hours. French regional trains to Menton, Monaco and Nice leave constantly: Nice is about 55 minutes away. The Tenda railway to Cuneo also starts from Ventimiglia, taking just under three hours. Until 11 December 2026 the line to Nice is closed at night for engineering works, from 10pm to 6am, Sunday to Thursday.

By bus

Riviera Trasporti buses link Ventimiglia with the coast and the inland valleys. Line 2 goes to Bordighera and Sanremo, with frequent services on weekdays; line 7 runs up the val Nervia to Dolceacqua, Isolabona and Pigna; line 1 goes to La Mortola and the Hanbury Gardens, but only on weekdays.

By air

The nearest airport is Nice Côte d’Azur, about 53 kilometres away: by car it takes about 50 minutes without traffic, with motorway tolls. Alternatively, get to Nice Ville station and take a regional train to Ventimiglia, which takes about 55 minutes.

Parking

On Fridays, however, the market takes over the seafront and the banks of the Roia and traffic, including from France, is heavy: arrive early in the morning or come by train. Ventimiglia Alta has narrow, steep streets: leave the car down below and walk up. Before leaving your car, always check the signs: parking rules can change on market days and during events.

Frequently asked questions about Ventimiglia

What can you see in Ventimiglia in one day?

The Nervia archaeological area in the morning, Ventimiglia Alta with the Cathedral, the Baptistery and Porta Canarda, then the Hanbury Gardens and the Balzi Rossi in the afternoon.

When is the market in Ventimiglia?

The big open-air market is held every Friday morning, all year round, on the seafront and along the river. A full ticket costs 4 euros.

How far is Ventimiglia from France?

Ventimiglia’s municipal area runs right up to the border: from the centre to Menton it is about 11 kilometres, a quarter of an hour by car.

How do you get from Ventimiglia to Nice and Monaco?

By train: French regional trains leave from Ventimiglia station and stop at Monaco and Nice, which is about 55 minutes away. By car, Monaco is about half an hour away without traffic.

Why is it called Ventimiglia?

The name comes from the Roman town of Albintimilium, the chief town of the Intemelii.
