It is really three places in one: Finalmarina on the sea, Finalborgo inland behind its medieval walls, and Finalpia around its abbey. To the east is Varigotti, with pastel houses right on the beach. The modern town was formed in 1927 by merging the three villages and has around 10,800 residents.

For six centuries this stretch of coast was the Marquisate of Finale, held by the Del Carretto family from 1162, then by Spain from 1602 and finally by Genoa from 1713. That history explains the castles on the hills, the gates of Finalborgo and the Spanish triumphal arch on the seafront.

People come for two reasons: the sea, with sandy beaches between headlands and several Blue Flags, and the outdoors. Behind the coast there are more than 200 mountain bike trails and over 4,000 climbing routes on Finale limestone, and from 16 to 18 October 2026 the area hosts the UCI Enduro World Championships. Unlike the Cinque Terre or Portofino, Finale is a year-round destination: beaches in summer, bikes and crags in spring and autumn.

What to see in Finale Ligure

Finalmarina and Finalpia are easy to explore on foot along the seafront. Finalborgo is a 20–30 minute walk or a short bus ride inland; for the castles and the Roman bridges you will want walking shoes.

Finalmarina and the seafront

Finalmarina is the liveliest part of town: a palm-lined promenade, the beach right in front of the houses and an old centre of arcaded streets and squares. Its heart is Piazza Vittorio Emanuele II, lined with 17th-century buildings. Most shops, cafés and services are here, and the train station is a few minutes from the sea.

Basilica of San Giovanni Battista

Finalmarina’s large church is one of the finest examples of Ligurian Baroque. Work started in 1619 and ended in 1674; the façade was finished in 1762 to a design by local architect Nicolò Barella, who also designed the dome built in 1780. Inside, three naves are divided by paired columns of white Carrara marble, modelled on San Siro in Genoa.

The Spanish Arch

On the seafront stands the Arch of Margherita Teresa, known to everyone as the Arco di Spagna. It went up in just a few months, between May and August 1666, designed by Sebastiano Bocciardo, to welcome the Infanta Margarita, daughter of Philip IV of Spain, on her way to Vienna to marry Emperor Leopold I. A single archway between four columns, it is the symbol of Finale’s Spanish period.

Finalborgo

About 2 km from the sea, enclosed by 15th-century walls, Finalborgo is listed among the Most Beautiful Villages in Italy and is the highlight of the town. You enter through Porta Reale, built in 1702, or Porta Testa, dated 1452 and named after the heads of executed prisoners once displayed there. Just inside is the collegiate church of San Biagio, a 17th-century building raised on a 14th-century church whose apse and bell tower survive.

The convent of Santa Caterina, founded in 1359, houses the Archaeological Museum of Finale, which covers more than 350,000 years of human presence with finds from the local caves. Check opening times on the museum website. For lanes, shops and summer evenings, see our guide to Finalborgo.

Castel San Giovanni

Above Finalborgo, a few minutes’ walk up the old Strada Beretta, is the fort built by the Spanish in the mid-17th century. From its terraces you look down on the rooftops, the valley and the sea. It is the shortest scenic walk you can do from Finalborgo.

Castel Gavone and the Diamond Tower

Further along the Strada Beretta, on the hill of Perti, are the ruins of Castel Gavone, the fortified residence of the Del Carretto, first recorded in 1128. Its highlight is the Diamond Tower, added around 1490: the blocks of Finale stone are cut into pyramid points, and it is one of the most original pieces of Renaissance military architecture in Italy. The Genoese demolished the castle in the early 18th century, and the recent restoration left the damage visible. Inside visits are guided only and must be booked: details on the MUDIF, Finale’s diffuse museum.

Finalpia Abbey

Finalpia sits between Finalmarina and Varigotti. Its landmark is the abbey of Santa Maria di Pia, still home to Benedictine monks. The bell tower in Finale stone, with three tiers of mullioned windows and an octagonal spire, dates from the 13th century; in the 1470s the monastery passed to the Olivetan monks at the Del Carretto family’s request, and the façade is Baroque.

Varigotti

Varigotti is the easternmost part of the town, right on the sea: low pastel houses lined up on the sand, the olive-covered headland of Punta Crena and the church of San Lorenzo on the hill. It is the place for a quieter beach day and the starting point of the Pilgrim’s Path. More in our guide to Varigotti.

Arene Candide Cave and the Caprazoppa

The Caprazoppa is the headland west of Finalmarina, towards Borgio Verezzi. In its rock opens the Arene Candide cave, one of the key prehistoric sites in Europe: this is where the burial of the “Young Prince”, a boy who lived about 24,000 years ago, was found. Visits are only with an archaeologist, on set dates and by booking through the museum (tel. +39 019 690020); the walk in takes about half an hour and tours are cancelled in rain.

Val Ponci and the Roman bridges

Inland above the hamlet of Verzi, the Val Ponci (“valley of bridges”) preserves five bridges of the Via Julia Augusta, the Roman road linking Italy and Gaul. Going up the valley you meet the Ponte delle Fate, the best preserved and still walkable, then the Sordo, Voze, Acqua and Magnone bridges. The route is about 4–5 km on dirt road and path, shared with mountain bikers; start from the parking area just before the Ponte delle Fate.

Church of the Five Bell Towers

Near Castel Gavone on the Perti hill stands the small Chiesa dei Cinque Campanili, instantly recognisable by its five little bell towers. It was commissioned in the second half of the 15th century by Alfonso I Del Carretto and pairs well with the walk up to the castle.

Beaches in Finale Ligure

The beaches are almost all sand mixed with fine shingle. The area has more than 200 trails running from the hills down to the sea, with the Manie plateau and the Feglino area among the busiest. The first races date from the late 1990s; since the first Finalenduro in 2008 the area has hosted Enduro World Series rounds and the UCI Enduro World Cup, and in 2026 the Enduro and E-Enduro World Championships (16–18 October). Shuttle services, bike hire and guides are easy to find.

Many trails are technical and only suitable for experienced riders, but there are easier routes and e-bike itineraries too. Official maps are on the website of the Finale Outdoor Region consortium, whose For You Card raises money for trail maintenance.

Rock climbing

Pale, pocketed Finale limestone made this area one of the birthplaces of European sport climbing. The first modern routes date from 1968, and by the 1970s and 1980s climbers were arriving from all over the world. Today there are more than 4,000 routes, from easy grades up to 8c+, both single-pitch and multi-pitch. The best-known crags are Rocca di Perti, Monte Cucco, Rocca di Corno, Monte Sordo and the Caprazoppa, plus the sea cliffs of Capo Noli. If you are new to climbing, book a mountain guide.

Walks and hikes

Pilgrim’s Path (Sentiero del Pellegrino): from Varigotti to Noli over the Capo Noli headland, waymarked with a red X. Here and in the inland hamlets (Perti, Calvisio, Le Manie) you will find B&Bs, rooms, agriturismi and bike-friendly places, often with bike storage and a wash area.

Varigotti is the quietest option, for couples and families who want to be on the beach. In summer and on big MTB race weekends, book early.

How to get to Finale Ligure

By car

Take the A10 Genoa–Ventimiglia motorway and exit at Finale Ligure; from the toll booth you are at the sea in a few minutes. The coastal Via Aurelia is slower but scenic between Noli and Varigotti. Italian motorways are tolled.

By train

Finale Ligure Marina station, on the Genoa–Ventimiglia line, is in the centre, a few minutes from the beach. Direct regional trains from Genova Brignole take about an hour, and there are direct services to Milan. Timetables and tickets on Trenitalia. To reach the Cinque Terre, change in Genoa.

By bus

TPL Linea buses link the station with Finalborgo, Finalpia and Varigotti and continue to Noli and Savona. They are handy for the eastern beaches, where parking is scarce. Routes and times on TPL Linea.

By plane

The nearest airport is Genoa Cristoforo Colombo, about 70 km away: allow around an hour by car, or take the bus to Genova Sestri Ponente station and then the train. Nice Côte d’Azur airport is about 140 km away, with more international flights.

Parking

Finalborgo, Finalmarina and Varigotti have limited traffic zones (ZTL) with camera-controlled gates: do not drive through the gates of Finalborgo or into the centre of Varigotti, or you will be fined. Along the seafront and around the centre there is paid parking (blue lines); free spaces are few and further out. In summer arrive early, or leave the car at your accommodation and get around on foot, by bike or by bus.

Frequently asked questions about Finale Ligure

What can you see in Finale Ligure in one day?

In the morning, Finalborgo with Porta Testa, San Biagio and the archaeological museum, plus the climb to Castel San Giovanni.
