It lies in the province of Imperia, halfway between Imperia and the French border, about an hour from Nice airport.

With more than fifty thousand inhabitants it is the largest town in western Liguria, and it stays lively all year round. From the late 19th century it was one of Europe’s great winter resorts: Empress Maria Alexandrovna of Russia stayed here, as did Alfred Nobel, who died here in 1896, and the family of Italo Calvino. The climate is among the mildest in Italy, with an average of over 10 degrees in January, and in summer the sea reaches 24–25 degrees.

The name comes from San Romolo, a 5th-century bishop of Genoa who withdrew as a hermit to the hills behind the town: in dialect “San Romolo” became “San Remo”. In Roman times the villa Matutiana stood here. Today Sanremo is also the “city of flowers”: the wholesale flower market is in Valle Armea, and every spring the Corso Fiorito fills the streets with floats covered in fresh flowers.

What to see in Sanremo

The centre is easy to explore on foot: from the sea you climb into the alleys of La Pigna, walk along the street of shopping and the Festival, and return along the seafront past villas and gardens. To see everything at a relaxed pace you need at least two days.

La Pigna, the old town

Sanremo’s medieval old town is called La Pigna (“the pine cone”) because its houses, packed against the hillside, form a cone shape that recalls a pine cone. It is a maze of carruggi (narrow alleys), stairways, arches and covered passages built as a defence against pirates, climbing from the market area up to the Regina Elena gardens. On the way up you find quiet little squares, oratories and old fishermen’s and farmers’ houses.

Santuario Madonna della Costa

At the top of La Pigna, about a hundred metres above the sea, stands the Baroque sanctuary of the Madonna della Costa, with a great dome visible from all over town and a churchyard decorated with a pebble mosaic. In 2026 it was awarded the Blue Flag for five stretches: Tre Ponti, Baia Capo Pino, Tiro a Volo, Bussana and Imperatrice. The beaches are made of shingle and pebbles, with some stretches of coarse sand; the easiest way to get from one to another is the cycle path.

Pian di Poma

To the west, towards Ospedaletti, beach clubs follow one another along the cycle path. At Pian di Poma levante there is a stretch where dogs of all sizes are allowed, with showers and shade.

Imperatrice beach

The stretch below the Passeggiata Imperatrice, a short walk from the Casino, has the 2026 Blue Flag and is the most convenient if you are staying in the centre.

Tre Ponti and Baia Capo Pino

To the east, along the cycle path, the long pebble beach of Tre Ponti is a favourite with locals and quieter than the beaches in the centre. Both Tre Ponti and Baia Capo Pino have the 2026 Blue Flag.

Bussana

Sanremo’s easternmost beach, with the 2026 Blue Flag, is the furthest from the centre and the best choice if you are looking for peace and quiet. It is easy to reach by bike.

All the beaches, with the Blue Flag stretches, free beaches and dog-friendly beaches, are in the guide to the beaches of Sanremo.

Sanremo in one day: an itinerary

Morning: breakfast on corso Matteotti, then climb up through La Pigna to the Regina Elena gardens and the Madonna della Costa sanctuary.

Late morning: walk down to San Siro and the Russian Orthodox church; if it is Tuesday or Saturday, browse the market in piazza Eroi Sanremesi.

Lunch: sardenaira from a focaccia shop in the centre, or fish at the Porto Vecchio.

Afternoon: the Casino and the seafront promenade as far as Nobel’s villa and the Ormond park, or a stretch of the cycle path by bike.

Evening: an aperitivo by the harbour or on corso Matteotti, passing the Ariston.

With a second day, add Bussana Vecchia and a trip inland; with a third, Bordighera or the Côte d’Azur.

What to eat in Sanremo

Sanremo’s cuisine is that of western Liguria: fish, vegetables, aromatic herbs and Taggiasca olive oil.

Sardenaira: the thick, soft focaccia born in Sanremo, topped with tomato, anchovies, Taggiasca olives, garlic and oregano. The name comes from the sardines once used instead of anchovies; its historic name is pissalandrea.

Brandacujun: stockfish beaten with potatoes, olive oil and parsley until creamy, served warm.

Catch of the day: anchovies, prawns and local fish in the harbour restaurants.

Wines: Pigato, Vermentino and Rossese from the Riviera Ligure di Ponente.

Events in Sanremo

Italian Song Festival (February): the 2027 edition will take place from 16 to 20 February at the Ariston, hosted by Stefano De Martino. Most hotels are mid-range, with a few grand historic luxury hotels on the seafront; budget options are harder to find in summer and over the holidays.

The centre, between corso Matteotti and the Passeggiata Imperatrice, is the most convenient for getting around on foot; the western side of town is quieter and close to the cycle path; Portosole and the harbour are ideal for nightlife. During the Festival, the Milan–Sanremo and the Corso Fiorito, hotels sell out: book well in advance.

How to get to Sanremo and where to park

By car

Take the A10 Genoa–Ventimiglia motorway to the Sanremo exit, from where a panoramic road leads down into town; alternatively, leave at Arma di Taggia and take the Aurelia bis. From Genoa it takes about two hours.

By train

Sanremo station is underground and opened in 2001 on the new Genoa–Ventimiglia line: from the entrance hall on corso Cavallotti to the platforms there is a long corridor of about 700 metres with moving walkways, so allow about ten extra minutes. From Ventimiglia it takes 12–23 minutes, from Genova Piazza Principe about two hours, and from Milano Centrale about three and a half hours on direct Intercity trains. For Nice, change at Ventimiglia.

By bus

Riviera Trasporti buses link Sanremo with Ventimiglia, Bordighera, Arma di Taggia and the hinterland. The old trolleybus no longer exists: the line was withdrawn in 2024 and is now served by buses.

By plane

The nearest airport is Nice Côte d’Azur, about 65 kilometres away: by car it takes about an hour, with French and Italian motorway tolls.

ZTL and car parks

Sanremo’s pedestrian centre, including corso Matteotti, piazza Sardi, piazza Bresca, piazza San Siro, via Corradi and via De Benedetti, is controlled by electronic gates: you can only enter with a permit. Blue-line parking is charged Monday to Saturday, 8am to 8pm: since June 2026 non-residents pay €2.10 an hour. Among the most convenient car parks are the Palafiori in piazza Colombo, near the Ariston, the Volta car park and the station car park. Since July 2026 campervans can stay in the new Green Park area at Pian di Poma. All the details are in the guide to parking in Sanremo.

Frequently asked questions about Sanremo

What can you see in Sanremo in one day?

La Pigna with the Regina Elena gardens and the Madonna della Costa sanctuary, the Co-cathedral of San Siro, the Russian Church, corso Matteotti with the Ariston Theatre, the Casino and the Passeggiata Imperatrice as far as Villa Nobel.

Are Sanremo’s beaches sandy?

No, they are mostly shingle and pebbles, with some stretches of coarse sand.
