In that year the master Antonio Oliveri (the surname also appears as Olivieri) opened the first filigree workshop in Campo Ligure, after working in Genoa. Other craftsmen followed his example and the workshops grew to 33: the town became the main production centre and is today considered the national centre of gold and silver filigree. Local sources do not agree on why the master moved, which is why we leave out the legends, such as the cholera one.

A single source adds that earlier the inhabitants made nails for the Genoese shipyards, an activity that lost value in the second half of the 19th century: treat this with caution.

How filigree is made

The work follows four stages, the same ones the museum’s multimedia exhibit explains on the top floor. First the metal is cast into bars. Then it is drawn, that is, pulled until it becomes a very fine thread. The thread is twisted to make the «filo granato». Finally the craftsman shapes and solders the design by hand with pliers and flame, and finishes the piece. The result is a light ornament made of a lattice of thread.

Since much of the work is manual, the surest way to understand what you are buying is to ask the craftsman to show you the process and tell you the metal.

The Filigree Museum «Pietro Carlo Bosio»

The museum is in via della Giustizia, in the former Palazzo di Giustizia (courthouse), and grew out of the donation by Pietro Carlo Bosio and his wife, who collected pieces in markets and shops across Europe. Bosio promoted exhibitions in 1973, in 1982 (at Palazzo Doria, Genoa) and in 1983. Sources do not agree on the number of pieces (some speak of about two hundred, others of over three hundred and fifty), but all say they come from four continents and are arranged by area: Europe, Asia, Africa and Latin America. You see jewellery, furnishings and rare pieces.

The hours are the autumn ones from the official website: Friday 16:00–18:00, Saturday and Sunday 10:30–12:00 and 16:00–18:00. Groups and guided visits are booked on 010 920099 or 351 980 7931. The site also mentions a guided visit on Saturday and Sunday at 11:40, with the climb up the castle tower. The ticket price is not published. For combined visits with the castle and the multimedia museum TraMe see the Campo Ligure guide.

Workshops and studios

The filigree workshops are along the lanes that climb to the castle. Some work in view of the public and are the right place to understand the craft; many open by appointment. Buying directly from the craftsman is the simplest choice: you can see the piece and have the technique explained. Prices depend on the metal and the work: there is no list, so always ask first.

If you want to try it, contact FiligranArt, a training centre run by the master craftsmen of the Intrecci Preziosi association. It runs courses for adults and children: in the experiences for the youngest, they make a small flower that becomes a pendant. Hours, duration and prices are not published: write or phone beforehand.

The international exhibition of 2026

After more than fifteen years the Filigree Exhibition returned in 2026, for the first time in an international edition. It was held on 20 and 21 June in the newly restored former Convent Church, with filigree makers from Campo Ligure and women artists and teachers from North Macedonia, the United States, the Netherlands and China, as well as experiments with a 3D printer. It was promoted by the municipality as part of a project funded by the PNRR (Italy’s recovery plan). A next edition is not confirmed; in the past the exhibition was held between August and September.

Frequently asked questions about Campo Ligure’s filigree

What is filigree?

A goldsmith’s craft using extremely fine gold or silver threads, twisted and soldered by hand to form light lattices.

Since when has filigree been made in Campo Ligure?

Since 1884, when the master Antonio Oliveri opened the first workshop.
